MHS hosts Little Mustang Football Camp

The Malta Mustangs held their annual Little Mustang Football Camp on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Malta Mustangs Practice Football Field.

"We had a great turnout for our Little Mustang Football Camp with 24 campers," Malta Mustangs Head Coach Nick Oxarart said.

The camp for students third to fifth grade, was directed by Coach Oxarart with help from his assistant coaches Travis Somerfeld, Aaron DeVries, and Zach Handley. The camp also featured help from several Mustang football players including Kooper Oxarart, Parker Mortenson, Pierce Mortenson, Connor Tuss, and Rex Williamson who helped coach the campers in all the drills.

The camp taught youth football players a variety of fundamental skills and the coaches stressed proper technique during tackling drills.

"We tried to work on all phases of the game of football," Coach Oxarart. "We worked on run blocking, handoffs, pass-catching, route running, and throwing for the offense. On defense, we worked on tackling, tracking the ball carrier, and shedding blocks."

Coach Oxarart said that the athletes seemed to enjoy running routes during offensive drills on offense and defensively the children enjoyed tacking dummies and each other on defense.

"This was a great bunch of kids to coach," Coach Oxarart said. "There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm which provided a great atmosphere to be around. Hopefully, they learned a few skills that will help them have success in our youth flag football program and eventually in our junior high and high school program as well. We had a lot of fun and are already looking forward to next year."

High School camp is set to start on Monday, July 13, and conclude on Wednesday, July 15 at the Malta High School Practice Field. Middle School Football Camp is also set to take place from July 13 to July 15. High School camp will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Middle School camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
