Plans for fair progress rapidly

Phillips County's 30th annual fair is scheduled to be at the fairgrounds on Sunday, August 19, and continue through Monday, August 20, will be as good if not better than previous fairs in spite of wartime curtailments.

The board of directors announced that the Northern Exposition Shows will provide five different rides, three shows, and operate various concessions. There will be a racing program with the local horses. It is understood the Dodson Saddle Club is planning a special feature for this year's fair.

Free acts fir the night shows will include the "Star-Spangled Follies," Torrini and Phillips, and acts of magic and illusions; Don Maquil and Conchita, in a wire act, and Frank and Ranie and Co., a dog act with comedy tumbling.

Earl South is added to list of heroes

Earl South, one of the first Malta boys to enter the army and one of the first to be taken prisoner in the war with Japan, was lost at sea while the Japanese were transferring prisoners from the Philippines to Japan according to word received by Mrs. P. J. Minehan from South's mother, Mrs. F. A. Francis of Deerwood, Minn.

South was taken prisoner in the Japanese assault upon Corregidor in 1942. He left Malta as a member of Company D of the National Guard. He had lived at the Minehan home while attending high school in Malta and had been employed as a night clerk at the Fifth Avenue Hotel for a time.

The last word received directly from him was last fall, it is understood. The tentative date of the tragedy in which he lost his life was given as October 24, 1944.

55th Annual Phillips County Fair starts next Friday in Dodson

In addition to the two top-notch night shows lined up for this year's Phillips County Fair, perhaps the biggest change that fairgoers will notice is that the rodeo grounds have been completely redone, bringing them much closer to the grandstand so spectators will have a better view of the violent proceedings that go on there. New chutes, gates, and fences have been constructed to help with the staging of the show, which this year is being produced by Mon-Can Rodeo Co. of Malta.

For many, the biggest attraction of the fair will be the appearance Sunday evening of the sons of The Pioneers, a singing group with which Roy Rogers got his start. Marian Waters reports that the group is in Ohio this week appearing at a large fair with Roy Rogers and will be coming to Dodson following this engagement.

The night show Saturday night will be a variety show of the type which has been so popular with fair friends in past years period featured will be comedians, magicians, dancers, acrobats, and the many unusual acts which delight young and old.

Street Talk

Question: Is there any major problem in the world which is beyond your ability to deal with as an individual which has you concerned?

Dale Bruckner: Yes, the restrictions of religion in our public schools and youth system.

Frank Muniz: Yes, the state of the economy, worldwide.

Cecelia Lankford: Just that the countries can't get along together. People don't get along like they used to.

Kathy Johnson: Yes, the poverty and the inability to get to the root of it. It frustrates me that we can't solve it. The root of it is education.
