100 years ago

July 27,1920

A big celebration was advertised for July 20, at the H. R. Huston place, seven miles Southwest of Malta.

Grover Wait had promised to repeat his Wild West Show staged the previous year at his ranch on the north bench. Principle attraction was to be steer riding by Bert Moylan and Vern Ludwick.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Tout at Havre.

***

A severe windstorm blew windows out at the Murray Drug Store and the Smoke House.

Ike Niebaur was down from Dodson informing friends that he would seek the Republican nomination for County commissioner.

Doctor G. W. Clay was a candidate for reelection to the state Senate on the Republican ticket.

J. R. Piper, one of the first Phillips County boys to enlist in World War I, had returned to Malta from Chicago after his discharge from the army.

Milton Porter had received several broken ribs while rounding up horses on his farm in Strater.

***

Street commissioner Vert was mowing weeds along the sidewalks and on vacant lots.

Several members of the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives were in Malta while on tour of the West. Project manager G. F. Straighten of U. S. Reclamation, H. A. Parker, and Mayor John Survant accompanied the party on an inspection trip by auto from Saco to Malta.

Herbert Stuckey attended the state firearms convention At Roundup as a delegate from the Malta Fire Department.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bentzin had returned to their home in Helena after visiting at the Varzatt home here.

A democratic ticket had been announced by the local group. H. L. Wolfe, Jr., was candidate for representative; Enoch Taylor for county commissioner; W. B. Howard for clerk and recorder; C. J. Brockway for clerk of court; Mike O'Neill for sheriff; Mrs. George Cowie for superintendent of schools, and V.E. Misener for assessor.

The George Cowie home and contents were destroyed by fire.

Charles Fry and Lola Anderson were married in Malta.

75 years ago

July 29, 1945

Farm home burns

Fire totally destroyed the Egil Solberg home and all its contents in the Bennett Lake community last weekend. Mrs. Solberg and her two children were at home alone when the fire started from the chimney and they were unable to save anything.

Child's sight saved by plane trip to Billings

An emergency plane flight to a Billings hospital last Thursday Knight save the sight of 2 1/2 year old Vance Spencer.

The child fell on a pitchfork while playing in the yard of his home on Telegraph Creek, 25 miles South of Malta. The tine entered the left eye. He was brought to town immediately by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Spencer and local physicians advised them to take the child to a specialist at once.

Carl Veseth, who operates the flying school here, volunteered the use of his plane and his instructor, Walter Hensley.

50 years ago

July 27, 1970

25 years as Malta Dodge dealer

N.W. "Pete" Dobson was recognized last week for 25 continuous years in the auto business at is Malta Dodge dealership Dobson Motors. Dobson actually started selling Dodges in Malta in 1937, but World War II interrupted. Dobson started again in 1945 in an old wooden building at the sire of his present business. The present building was erected in 1949. Dobson has been assisted in the operation of the business for many years by his wife, Arleta.

MHS Cheerleaders receive trophy

The Malta High School varsity cheerleaders came home with a trophy from a clinic held at Montana State University for taking second place.

The cheerleaders are Pauline Olson, Janine Simanton, Denise Licht, Leslie Long, and Charlese Ruud.

Pekovitch sets pool records

Malta Swim Team member LeeAnn Pekovitch set new pool records in the individual medley and the fly events at the Roundup swim meet this past weekend.

She also set a new pool record in the 100-fly event with the fastest time recorded by timers in the event.

Malta population 1,816

The population of the City of Malta is 1,816 according to figures released by the State of Montana based on preliminary results from the 2010 census.
