Mustangs drop first home tilt to St. Mary's

Outweighed appreciably and outsmarted consistently, the Blue and White Mustangs of Malta Friday night took an 18-0 trouncing from St. Mary's of Great Falls in the first home game.

The Mustangs can comfort themselves with two achievements. One was a sustained ground and overhead attack which netted three consecutive first downs in the third period and the other was the courageous and shifty running of a backfield man named Edwards.

Homes change hands

A number of homes in Malt have changed hands within the last two weeks, among them being the sale of the Charles Mieritz residence to Mrs. Recca Mitchell; the sale of the Ed Smith house on Survant Street to Floyd Wilson; the sale of the Len Rawdown house to Charles Anderson; the sale of the Oliver Wehnes residence to Henry Ulrich, and the sale of the Henry Corry house to Mrs. Irene Messerly.

Fire destroy five downtown businesses

City sanitation worker Tim Hasler was making his rounds in the alley behind the Phillips County News when he noticed smoke coming from the building about 3:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Malta Volunteer firefighters were on the scene within 20 minutes. The building owner, Curtis Starr, was notified and heeded for the scene.

Clark Kelly, first commander on the scene, said approximately 30-40 firefighters and 13 trucks responded from Malta, Glasgow, Saco, Fort Belknap, Dodson, Zortman, and Chinook.

The fire ripped through the 95-year-old, two-story building and destroyed the Phillips County News, Malta Appliance Center, Sue's Stylette, Three Sisaters, and Eclectic Design.

Smoke and water damage also affected the Mint bar and Family Matters.
