Post office at Content in Dyers' hands 31 years

Because of the retirement of Mrs. Joe Dyer as postmaster of Content, the people of that community are without such convenience for the first time in 43 years and must depend upon rural mail delivery from Malta.

The community of Content, 35 miles southwest of Malta, was originally known as Baeth because George Baeth was first appointed postmaster in 1902. The name of the post office was changed in 1912 by Mr. Dyer because careless writers often misspelled the name and mail destined from Butte often arrived at the Phillips County outpost.

POWs leave Malta for Papago cotton harvest season

One hundred and sixty German prisoners of war were loaded out of Malta last week after having been station at the Malta camp since early last June.

The prisoners worked in the sugar beet fields in the Malta district through the thinning, hoeing, and harvesting season and many were employed by farmers and ranchers on other types of farm jobs. Two youths, stranded in blizzard, found safe

Two 18-year-old youth were the objects of much worry and a search during last Friday night's blizzard, but were safe when found Saturday morning.

Ken Kaufman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Kaufman of Malta, and Jim Beauregard of Fort Benton, both students of Eastern Montana College in Billings, had come to Malta for the weekend and left on a short hunting jaunt about 2 p.m. Friday. The were expected back around 5 p.m.

About 5 p.m., the pickup in which they were riding in got stuck in a coulee and in the boys efforts to free it rolled the vehicle onto its side. They walked for about four and a half miles to a deserted cabin and found coffee and popcorn to eat. They rigged up a light to hang outside the cabin and it was that light that Ken's older brother, Kit, and Dick Pancake discovered about daybreak.

Street Talk

Question: Who is the toughest person on your list to buy gifts for, and why?

Ed Potter: My wife, I guess. I never seem to know what she'd like to have and I wait 'till the last minute.

Kim Shettel: I don't know...guys, I guess, because you never know what they like.

Denise Black: Either my kids or my husband. They already have everything they want.

Ed Dusek: My Dad. He pretty much as everything he needs and always says 'I don't need anything!' I've already gotten him a subscription to the PCN.
