100 years ago

December, 1920

The equipment of the institution formerly known as the Tucker hospital was moved from the old location to the Survant resident, presented recently by Senator John Survant to the county for use as a hospital. Miss Ostenso was the manager.

Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Williamson were the parents of a baby boy.

Blumenthal’s were taking orders for tubs of lutefisk for the Christmas season. A 50-lb tub was available for $5.

A demonstration of Nash’s toasted coffee and Libby’s canned goods would be held at Kronschnabel’s (A demonstration?)

On could purchase a wool automobile robe at B.H. Koke’s leather store for between $4.50 and $20.

A Minot, N.D., truck had struck a snowstorm that had buried the area and required 18 hours to negotiate the highway from Dodson to Malta.

“Delores Knutson-Our Popular Young Junior”

The column, “Making Malta High a Pleasant Place,” notes that “Delores Knutson is known by almost everyone in school, she’s one of our promising seniors, and plans to take college training to become a medical secretary. Her favorite subject is shorthand, and “Blondy” is really good at it. Knutson thinks that drinking and smoking are bad habits, but “Blondy” is crazy about dancing. ‘Tis true cause you can see her at Kid Curry’s a couple times a week. The song she likes best of all is 'Always'.”

(Editor’s note: “Blondy” went on to become the first female president of First State Bank. She married Wm. James (B.J.) Campbell, Malta postmaster, and raised Bryce Campbell, Billie Rae Maxie, and Kevin Campbell.

PVC Hamilton Listed Among War Dead

Phillips County’s World War II casualty list was augmented this week by the name of Pfc. Woodrow Hamilton, listed as officially killed in action by the by the war department. Pfc. Hamilton had been missing in action since November 23, 1944.

Will Gravel Road

A county crew started graveling operations this week on the Malta-Whitewater road. About five miles of the road between the Whitewater – Loring Y and the village of Whitewater will be graveled if weather conditions permit, according to S.A. Simonson, chairman of the board of county commissioners.

Eradication of Dread Disease Approaching

The Montana Tuberculosis Association has embarked upon the final stage of the eradication of tuberculosis. The year 1945 witnessed the purchase of a mobile x-ray unit – the magic eye, science’s newest and most powerful weapon against the disease, with which it will be possible, at a small cost, to chest X-ray every person in Montana.

Santa Visiting Next Saturday

The jolly old gentleman will make his official visit to Malta on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1p.m.

There will be plenty of snow and ice in Malta so Santa’s Sleigh should have no trouble making its way to the parking lot just east of the city park where 1,000 sacks of candy will be distributed to Phillips County youngsters. Members of the Phillips County Saddle Club who sponsor Santa's annual visit will meet at the home of Henry Compton on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. to sack the treats.

Wagon Train Movies, and Slides is Dec. 17th

Movies and slides of the 1970 Milk River Wagon Train will be shown at the VFW clubroom Thursday night beginning at 7p.m., Lou Perry, chairman of the Wagon Train committee, and Bud Hasler, wagon boss, announced today. Especially featured will be movies taken and edited by Gaylord LaFond. The public is invited to attend and see the films at no charge. (Editor’s note: Was this the beginning of a beautiful friendship for Santa, The Milk River Saddle Club, and members of the Wagon Train Committee?)

Coleman-Harms Wedding

In a quiet family wedding on Sunday, Dec. 6, Candee Lee Coleman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Coleman, and Walter Harms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Harms, Sr., all of Malta were united in marriage.

Mrs. Richard Cummings, of Malta was matron of honor for her sister. The best man was Karl Harms, J.r, brother of the bridegroom. Willie Harms was at the guest book.

The Phillips County CowBelles held their annual fall meeting Dec. 4.

Shirley Blunt, president of the CowBelles, presented an interesting program on ranching by showing a set of slides the North Central CowBelles put together depicting ranch life and what goes in to beef in the area. After the luncheon and program the members met at the city hall for a business meeting.

25 years ago- Wednesday, December 13th 1995

Hanson Lumber Company took first place in Monday night’s Parade of Lights in downtown Malta. Phillips County area residents braved the cold weather to attend the Parade of Lights and Christmas Stroll and make both of them successful events.

Helen and Gayle Young were in Helena for Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. Rusty Brown.

Curtis and Bonnie Starr and daughter Kiley have returned from Cedar City, UT, where they visited there son, Lance and Jana Starr, and their new son, Cabe. Cabe is the Starr’s first grandchild.

Malta M-ettes win 3rd title in a Decade

Malta High School Principle Kelly Taylor got into the spirit of things Saturday night by leading 400 to 500 M-ette fans in a cheer as the home team won their third state title of the decade.

Tom and Tammy LaFond are the new owners of Stretch’s, a new restaurant which will make its debut in Malta Friday. Karen Ellsworth will man a coffee shop from 6 to 11 a.m. daily.

As part of a Merchant’s promotional campaign, customers could clip and bring in coupons for sales at downtown businesses, such as 25% off any regularly priced item at the Fashion Carousel, or 10% off tapes, cd’s, videos & toys at Dan’s TV & Electronics, but at the Great Northern, THE BOONE BUCK would get you one dollar off of any meal. Imagine what those are worth now!
