School debris can go in landfill, including asbestos

Help continues to pour in to Malta in the wake of the Christmas Eve fire that destroyed the high school and junior high. Even though the City of Malta is not fiscally responsible for any of the work that is being done, it is doing what it can to make efforts by the school as easy as possible.

Street Talk: "How do you like your new school quarters?"

Jodi Olson: "I like our old school better, but the rooms here are bigger."

William Hofer: "It's okay, except for the stairs, because I'm still on crutches."

Chris Matthews: "It's better than the high school was!"

A letter to the editor from former teacher Marie Smith:

A special memory for me was having a tonsillectomy in what was recently known as the Malta Junior High School building. Dr. G.W. Setzer conducted the clinic with beds completely filling the auditorium.

My first teacher's meeting was special memory, also, conducted by Superintendent John H. Lesselyong. We were instructed: No smoking, no drinking, no late hours, no slacks, but to wear attractive dresses. My teaching career lasted over 40 wonderful years . . . all in the Malta schools, ending with my retirement in 1983.

Bozeman resident and international businessman Steve Daines stopped by Malta last Thursday to talk politics. Daines, who was the lieutenant governor candidate in 2008 during Roy Brown's unsuccessful bid for governor against Brian Schweitzer hopes to become the Republican candidate who will unseat first term U.S. Senator Jon Tester in the 2012 election. During his almost two hour visit with a handful of local citizens at a "Meet and Greet" session at the GN, Daines talked surprisingly little about Sen. Tester and more about government out of control.

Patty and Dallas Maxwell have leased Dr. Jim Curtis' practice and hope to be able to purchase it by the end of 2011. For Dr. Curtis, the arrangement is a chance to groom a successor so he can retire someday-a difficult challenge in an era when large animal veterinarians are hard to come by.
