PCN to offer E-edition of Newspaper

Beginning with next week's edition of the Phillips County News, we will offer an E-Edition. That's an electronic version of the newspaper which can be accessed and viewed on a computer. The E-Edition will be free for a trial period of 90 days and after that will be available by subscription only.

Community Foundation awards $4,500 in local grants

The Phillips County Community Foundation awarded $4,500 in local grants Sunday afternoon to a variety of local non-profit organizations. Board members Andrea Lien and Anne Boothe made the check presentations prior to the start of the Philip Aaberg Concert in the Malta High School Auditorium.

Arguments for proposed primary seatbelt law doesn't appeal to some local legislators or law enforcement

If Senator Brad Hamlett (D-Cascade) has his way, Montana will have a law allowing law enforcement officials to pull drivers over for not wearing a seatbelt. The proposal to make not wearing a seatbelt a primary offense and allowing law enforcement officials to pull a motorist over for that offense alone. A possibility which doesn't sit well with many in rural Montana. Many motorists see the proposed law as an invasion of privacy and a restriction on allowing them to make their own decision about seatbelt safety.

Expulsions possible over knife incident

When the Malta School board meets tonight one of the agenda items will be the possible expulsion of a male student as a result of an incident involving a knife. Supt. Bill Parker said the incident involved two young men in which a knife was taken from one student's pocket and a student was accidently cut. The superintendent said he wouldn't describe the situation as "aggressive."

Tana Oyler wins Super Bowl prize

Tana Oyler of Malta was the lucky winner of the Phillips County News Super Saturday Super Bowl drawing. She wins $100 in Chamber Bucks. She was one of several people who correctly guessed that the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers would score a total of 44 points between them. Final score of the Super Bowl was Cowboys 27 Steelers 17.

Howell named President

Gary Howell has been named president of First Security Bank in Malta. He was also made a director on the bank's 10-member board. Howell had been serving as executive vice president and chief executive officer. The new president joined First Security 11 years ago as a loan officer. He had previously worked for production Credit Association in Malta for one year and worked at another PCA location in western Montana for five years.

City Council Votes Against City Water Fluoridation

The Malta City council Monday night sent several telegrams to Phillips County representatives in Helena urging defeat of the senate bill which would require fluoridation of the water supplies of all Montana communities over 1,000, and also urging defeat of two bills in the legislature which would require compulsory unionization of public and private employees.

Northern Division Wresting meet in Malta This Friday-Saturday

The Northern Divisional Wrestling tournament gets underway at Malta High School this weekend. With a total of 223 boys scheduled to start wrestling Friday afternoon in 12 different weight classes, ranging from 98 pounds to the unlimited or heavyweight class. There are 17 to 21 boys in each weight class. Friday, beginning at 12 noon, there will be 132 matches on three mats, or an average of 44 matches per mat. Friday evening quarter finals will be wrestled as the tournament advances toward 12 divisional championships. The Friday evening session begins at 7:30 and there will be 48 matches. Semi-final matches, which are some of the best matches of the tournament, will be held on Saturday, beginning at 1 P.M.

Fire Damages Anderson Café In Noon Blaze

Extensive damage was done to the kitchen of the Anderson Café, Monday at noon, when a fire started from the range and spread rapidly through the rear end of the restaurant. The roof was damaged and the entire front end will have to be redecorated, according to Ray Harwood, proprietor. He says the café will be open again about the first of the week. The loss was covered by insurance. The building is owned by Mrs. May Cavanaugh.

Dodson Pump Contract To be Awarded: Great Falls Firm is Low Bidder on Irrigation Job

The contract- for construction of the Dodson pumping unit will be awarded immediately, according to a telegram received by the news Wednesday morning from Senator B.K. Wheeler, who state that the project has been cleared.

New Pastor called to Malta Church Duties

The Rev. L. W. Bruins of Marseilles, has accepted to call to the Little White Church in Malta, and will arrive to take over his duties about the middle of February. It was announced this week. Rev. Bruins was in Malta about two weeks ago conferring with the congregation. He has been pastor of the Marseilles Congregational Church for the past three years, and previous to that time served at Spearfish, S.Dak.
