Lady Mavs now 10-0; to face three teams

The Lady Mavericks have a 10-0 record after defeating a pair of Wildcat teams last week in a pair of replacement games against quality opponents.

“The girls continued to play their aggressive defense, not giving easy baskets to either team,” North Country Coach Amber Erickson said.

On Saturday, January 30, the Lady Mavericks defeated the Plentywood Wildcats 53-33 in Hinsdale. The game was set in place of the originally scheduled game against Nashua. The Nashua game was postponed due to COVID-19.

The Lady Mavericks were led by Kia Wasson who had 18 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals. Kaitlyn McColly had 15 points, six steals, and five rebounds. Jaycee Erickson had 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Teagan Erickson had six rebounds and two assists.

“Plentywood is a very solid team,” Coach Erickson said. “We were able to control the tempo much of the game and get solid defensive stops. Team stats we had 10 assists, 13 steals and outrebounded them 33-24.”

The team was also originally scheduled to play Class B’s Wolf Point on Thursday and Poplar on Friday, but both games were canceled due to COVID-19.

The Mavericks and Lady Mavericks were able to pick up games against Circle on Thursday in place of the Poplar game. The Lady Mavericks defeated the Wildcats 65-25.

“Circle is a strong post-orientated team, but by putting pressure on their guards we were able to prevent their posts from getting the ball as much as they wanted,” Coach Erickson said. “Our team’s stats included 14 steals and forcing 25 turnovers.”

The team was led by J. Erickson who scored 20 points, four rebounds, and three steals. McColly had 17 points, six steals and five rebounds. Kia Wasson had 13 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Paige Wasson had four points. T. Erickson had four points. Zandora Longtree had three points. Kelsee Cummings had two points and Kora LaBrie had two points.

The Lady Mavs defense held Circle to under ten points in each quarter; outsourcing them 17-5 in the first quarter, 16-5 in the second quarter, 16-9 in the third quarter, and 16-6 in the fourth quarter.

The team is scheduled to face the Dodson Coyotes in Dodson on Thursday, February 4, at 6 p.m. They will host Glasgow in Saco for the Saco High School Senior Night on Friday, February 5, at 6 p.m. They will then head to Scobey to face the Spartans on Saturday, February 6, at 6 p.m.
