Malta siren dispute steps closer to court?

The Dispute over Malta’s siren which sounds briefly every night at 9:30 p.m. is a step closer to a court date. Malta City clerk- Treasurer Carolyn Schmoeckel confirmed that the city was served papers last Thursday. The City Council and mayor met in executive session last night at their regular meeting to discuss the litigation. Tim and Arlys Spears owners of the Great Northern Hotel and Maltana Motel have filed a civil suit in 17th Judicial District Court through their lawyer seeking to get a preliminary and a permanent injunction prohibiting the city from continuing its current practice with the siren.

Flooding potential not so high in Phillips

The potential for flooding along the Milk River Valley is considerably higher downstream in Valley County than in Phillips County as things currently stand. That was the assessment of Ben Moyer, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service in Glasgow. He and a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) representative addressed the topic of flooding and flood insurance at a public meeting in Malta Tuesday night. Based on current snow measurements, Moyer said, his agency is “still not expecting the river here in Malta to flood at this point.”

Saco man searches for bone marrow donor

The Saco, Malta and Glasgow communities, in conjunction with the Inland Northwest Blood Center (INBC) will be hosting marrow donor recruitment drives in the hope of finding a marrow donor for Dale Marshall, 39, of Saco and the several thousand patients currently looking for donors

Mother doesn’t want to lose her son for a second time; she’s searching in Malta

Donna Standley doesn’t want her son to think she abandoned him twice in his life. That’s why she’s trying to track down the 23-year-old whom the courts took from her when she was 16. She thinks he may live and possibly work in Malta. Standley, who will be 40 in March, grew up in Billings but is currently working at a cousin’s ranch in Merced, Ca. She called the Phillips County News last Friday looking for help to locate her son.

‘Education-oriented’ firm is hired to design new schools

After more then 10 hours of interviews, it only took Malta School Board trustees about 10 minutes to decide what architectural firm they want to design the new Malta High School and Junior High complex. Board members last week hired the Billings firm Drake- Gustafson Associates, P.C. to do the job. The firm’s background in school construction seemed to be a big deciding factor in the board’s decision.

District ‘C’ Tourney Here This Week End

Teams and fans of the Class 3C basketball conference arrive in Malta today for the three-day district tournament to be held at the Malta High School gymnasium. The six teams of the District 3C tournament are Saco Panthers, Turner Tornadoes, Hinsdale Raiders, Dodson Coyotes, Whitewater Penguins and Frazer Bearcubs. Supt. James C. Nordlund tournament manager had the following remarks about the tourney: “We look for a good tournament. Malta people are interested in seeing the undefeated Saco ball team and four other teams will be scrambling for one of the other three top spots for advancement to the divisional tournament.

Malta Wrestlers Third in Divisional

Malta High School wrestlers placed third among Class B-C schools in the Northern Divisional wresting tournament held in Malta last Friday and Saturday, and five Mustangs qualified to compete in the state tournament in Bozeman next weekend by placing in the first four places in their respective weight classes.

Fire Destroys Building At Power Plant

Fire destroyed the house and contents at the power plant ferry on the Missouri River 26 miles southwest of Landusky while Foreman Ted Duvall and crew were cutting ice on the river two miles below. House and contents were a total loss. Origin of the fire is unknown as there had not been a fire in the stoves all day

Mustangs Hand Lacing To Old Foes

The marauding Malta Mustang basketball team went on a rampage last Friday night to massacre the Wolf Point Wolves 41-30 and avenge a previous 33-24 defeat. The game, played before an enthusiastic crowd at the Malta City Hall was, in the opinion of many spectators, one of the fastest of the season
