Season ends for Lady Coyotes

The season ended last Saturday night in the 2021 District 3C consolation finals Dodson Lady Coyotes in Malta, as the team fell 51-49 to the Lustre Christian Lady Lions.

The Lady Coyotes defeated the Frazer Lady Bearcubs 65-28 in the opening round of the tournament in Dodson, behind a 25 point performance by freshman Kataya KillEagle. Senior Melony Fetter had 22 points and Lindsey Fetter had 12 points.

The Lady Coyotes would then face the Scobey Spartans in the semifinals of the tournament in Malta on Thursday, February 18. Dodson lost 68-33. Scobey would lose the championship game 67-31 to North Country.

In Dodson’s loss to Scobey, the Lady Coyotes were led by L. Fetter, who had 11 points. KillEagle and Imagin Fox both had seven points, and M. Fetter had six points.

“Scobey’s shooting percentage has got to be the best in the district,” Coach KillEagle said. “They have discipline, and they can move the ball well.”

Dodson defeated Nashua 54-45 on Friday, February 19, to reach the consolation finals. Dodson was led by KillEagle who had 19 points. Fox had 11 points, M. Fetter had eight points, Jean Jackson had eight points, L. Fetter had five points, and Ireland Best had three points.

Previously in their regular-season matchups, Dodson had defeated Nashua handily, but Coach KillEagle made sure that his team focused.

“I always call the Nashua girls a tournament team,” Coach KillEagle said. “Come tournament time, those girls bring it.”

He said to his team that Nashua will play with confidence, so they had to battle hard even at tip-off.

“My girls might have gotten outhustled, but we were a little bit better in that game.”

In the consolation final game against Lustre Christian, the Lady Coyotes were led by M. Fetter who had 17 points. KillEagle had 14 points. L. Fetter had nine points, and made a heroic effort, stealing the ball twice in Lustre’s final possession; the first effort went out of bounds, and the second ended with Fetter getting fouled with less than three seconds to go. Fetter’s one-and-one attempt fell short.

Lindsey, a sophomore, also hit a three-pointer to close the gap to one point within the last ten seconds prior to her brilliant defensive play.

“I needed Lindsey to guard that inbound pass because her go, go, gadget arms can grab any ball that anyone tries to throw past her,” Coach KillEagle said. “I had no timeouts left to call to calm her down a little bit, so it was right to the free-throw line.”

Coach Killeagle said that his team gave it their all at the end, but it was too late.

Earlier in the game, the Lady Coyotes found themselves up 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. The team had several looks at the basket in the second quarter, but the shots were not falling, as the team scored only three points, while giving up 13.

Dodson found their rhythm again in the third quarter, scoring 13 points while holding Lustre to 11. The team closed the gap in the fourth outsourcing Lustre 19-14.
