Cuts threaten local tobacco use prevention program which advocates say really works

Teen tobacco use rates have dropped from 27 percent to 16 percent in Montana since the implementation of the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MTUPP). Here in Phillips County, teen tobacco rates have "dropped even further" said Jill Hould, local coordinator. Over the last 10 years local teen tobacco rates have drooped from 45.9 percent to 12.1 percent based on a Youth Risk Survey conducted in high schools every other year. All that could be threatened by the current Montana legislature. A joint subcommittee on Health and Human Services has proposed cutting $8.3 million out of the $9 million which had been budgeted for MTUPP.

Start of new airport construction still uncertain; runway could be recycled

Construction of Phillips County's new airport northwest of Malta probably wont get started before July, according to Airport Commission Chairman Lee Robinson. The commission is under the gun, however, to get construction underway during 1996 in order to make sure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funds are available. The FAA will fund an estimated $1,983,000 of the total cost, with Phillips County responsible for $253,700. David Gabbert, manager of the FAA's Airport District Office in Helena, has been contacted by a representative from the Malta School District's architectural firm who is gathering information as part of the site selection process. Since proponents of the site believe the runway would make a good entrance into the new school, people have been wondering what will happen to it.

Prehistoric Fish Taken From River Near Glasgow

The fact that the Milk River here is the home of the 30-pound fish that resembles a cross between a shark and a channel catfish was not known until Saturday when several small boys caught three embedded in the ice just below town. These paddlefish (which is the correct name) are survivors of a historic era, according to an article in Science Magazine. The fish were caught in the "riffle" east of the civic center by Bob McInerney, Jimmy Nelson, Bill Stuart and Jonny Gilbert. The largest weighed 31 pounds and 56 ¾ inches. Others were 30 and 27 pounders. With them, the boys picked up a 29-pound Buffalo Fish.
