Third time's a charm for Lady Panthers at State

The Saco-Whitewater Lady Panthers are basking in the warmth of their first ever Class C Girls Basketball State Championship-despite the cold weather outside. The Lady Panthers beat two previously undefeated teams on their way to the crown and got a gutsy performance in between when they chose to rest a starter nursing a bum knee..

Malta Cub Scouts hold Pinewood Derby

Cub Scout Pack 432 held its annual Pinewood Derby March 1, with local Cub Scouts building wooden cars from standard kits and racing them on an inclined track. Benajiah Campbell received the "Best Paint Job" award and the "Scout's Choice Award." James Waters received fourth place and the "Most Unusual Design" award. Marcus Knudsen won third place and the "Most Patriotic" award. RC Skiff won second place and the "Spirit of Dixie" award. The fastest car was built by Jackson Snell who also received the "Reverse Bomber" award. Cubmaster Dan Waters presided over the races. The Cubs will now go on to compete at the district meet in Havre and the Montana Council meet in Helena.

And it's on to State!

Displaying the poise and confidence they have enjoyed all year, Malta won the North-East Class B Divisional Tournament and earned a trip to the state tournament with a 62-58 victory over Fairfield Saturday night in Shelby. The Mustangs enter the Class B State Championship as the top seed from the Northern-Eastern Divisional. It's the first trip to the state tourney for Malta since the 1992-93 team finished fourth.

Committee Makes Plans for Seven Part Book on Malta Fire

The committee for the publication about the history of Malta High School met twice to plan its activities. At the second meeting the committee proposed the plan for the completed book of seven sections. The committee created subcommittees by graduation date to gather the necessary material and pictures.

Spelling Bee Winners

Tana Kappel, an eighth grader from Saco school, and Terry Olson, from St. Mary's Catholic school in Malta, were first and second place winners in the Phillips County Spelling Bee held at Saco last Thursday afternoon, March 11. Spellers from Dodson, Whitewater, St. Mary's, Landusky and Saco participated. Five contestants and two alternates from this bee will be eligible to attend the area spelling bee at Glendive on April 17. Other winners were Nancy Knudson from Saco, Steve Shaver from Dodson and Lori Dolphay from Whitewater. Two Dodson boys, Kenneth Munson and Dan Wilke, were alternates.

State Tourney Starts Today In Shelby

The undefeated Malta Mustang basketball squad left late Wednesday afternoon for Shelby to participate in the State Class B Basketball Tournament. The tournament begins Thursday with the top ranked Mustangs, Northern Division champions, meeting Huntley Project, second place team from the Southern Division, in the first game this afternoon at 2 p.m. The Mustangs who finished their second undefeated season in regular play, in two years, will be fighting for the state championship. Last year they collected both the district and divisional titles and then were upset in the state tournament at Butte by Baker and went on to win the third place trophy. Second, third and fourth place trophies from state basketball tourney competition rest in the Malta High School trophy case and this year the Mighty Malta Mustangs hope to bring home the big one!

Ceiling Announced For Hudson Cars

Ceiling prices for Hudson 1946 model passenger cars are announced by OPA. The prices range from $831 to $1230, plus excise taxes, transportation, preparation or handling charges. Due largely to specification changes the new Hudson 1946 model cars are priced from $55 to $97 above comparable 1942 models. The new prices include allowances for engineering equipment and addition of some items of optional equipment which were billed separately in 1942..

Cub Scouts Receive Achievement Awards at Meeting

Cub Scouts of Pack 132 met at the Woman's club house Monday evening for their regular monthly pack meeting. Seven Bobcats were received into the pack at a candlelight investiture ceremony. The following Cubs received achievement awards: Dickey Leivsay, Wolf rank; Richard Wilson, Wolf rank; Peter Hould, Wolf rank; Leland Mebust, Wolf rank; James Schumacher, Wolf rank with gold arrow and Bear rank with gold arrow; William Veseth, Wolf rank with gold arrow and Bear rank with gold arrow, and James Mebust, Wolf rank with gold arrow and Bear rank.
