Superintendent of Malta Public Schools talks levies

To the Malta Schools Community:

The Malta School Board of Trustees determined the necessity to run two (2) levies. A General Fund levy for $23,472.29 and a Building Reserve Fund Levy for $100,000 for ten years for a total of $1,000,000. Because of decreasing enrollments, the General Fund Levy of $23,472.29 will be an increase of $5,083 to next year’s General Fund Budget.

Building Reserve Fund: $100,000 levied for 10 years for a total of $1,000,000. To improve all the District’s Buildings and Campus’ and keep them safe and usable, the Board of Trustees determined that this levy is necessary.

The cost of these levies to you as the taxpayer are:

General Fund: This is approximately a 3.00 mill levy and would increase the taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 by approximately $4.05 and on a home with a market value of $200,000 by approximately $8.10 per year.

Building Reserve Fund: This is approximately a 12.77 mill levy and would increase the taxes on a home with a market value of $100,000 by approximately $17.24 and on a home with a market value of $200,000 by approximately $34.47 per year.

This equates to an approximate increase of $21.29 per year on a home with a market value of $100,000 and an approximate increase of $42.57 per year on a home with a market value of $200,000.

Currently, these are issues the District is dealing with: The older boiler system (in-floor radiant heat) in the Elementary school is leaking and needs to be replaced, as well as creating a fresh air exchange throughout the Elementary School building. The elementary gym’s roof also needs to be replaced because of numerous leaks. The Old Gym has various plumbing issues in locker rooms and in the bathrooms as well as a leaky roof. Plus, the gym floor will need to be upgraded in the near future. The Old Gym and the Wrestling Center both need general maintenance and repair to keep them in (safe) operation.

The High School/Middle School has various roof leaks and are in need of locker room improvements (change of showerheads, installing of stalls) along with improvements in the auditorium lighting and sound system. The District is continually dealing with various sidewalk/drainage and concrete issues.

The Board of Trustees studied all of the aforementioned issues and concluded that these issues need to be addressed in a timely manner and ask for your support. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Matt Genger

Superintendent of Malta Schools
