M-ettes seventh in Windy Havre Meet

The Malta M-ette track team took seventh place at the Havre Invitational last Saturday. The team had a total of 35 points. The Cal Wearley Memorial that was set for Wednesday, March 31, was postponed.

Fergus won the meet with a total of 69.5 points. Fort Benton was second with 65.5, Whitewater was third with 47 points, Conrad was fourth with 42.67, Havre was fifth with 41.5, and Saco was sixth with 38 points.

The M-ettes are scheduled to compete in Lewistown on Saturday, April 17, and then at the Malta Athletic Club Invitational on Tuesday, April 20.

The M-ettes were led by senior Erica Smith who took first place in triple jump with a mark set at 33-3. Smith also placed sixth in long jump with a mark left at 14-11.

Erica also attempted a new event last week, one of Malta Head Coach Kaitlyn Smith's favorite events; the javelin throw.

Smith nearly placed in javelin with a throw of 90.10-5.

"I have been trying to persuade Erica for four years and she finally caved," Coach Smith said. "She did well and I am excited to see what the rest of her season brings."

Junior Skylie Lefdahl took second in discus with a throw of 120-0, qualifying for state in the process. To qualify, Lefdahl had to reach a mark of 109-0.

"Coach (Andy Schell) told me to speed my steps up and I did that, and I kept my wrists flat, and the wind took it," Lefdahl said of her state-qualifying throw.

Lefdahl said that it feels good to be competing again, after not being able to compete due to the season's COVID-19 cancellation in 2020.

"We were all deprived of not getting a season last year," Lefdahl said. "I am happy to be able to get a track season this year."

She said that it was tough, especially for last year's senior and junior classes.

Now that she will be able to compete at state, Lefdahl shared her goals specifically in the discus event.

"I am hoping that I get to place," she said. "That's all that matters to me. And that I get a better throw than I did today."

Sophomore Tia Siewing placed second in shot put with a throw of 33-5.75. She also set a new best in discus with a throw of 79-8.

The long relay team consisting of Madyson Warburton, Leslie Young, Allison Kunze, and Gracie Honey took second with a time of 5:00.

Sophomore Addy Anderson was seventh in high jump after clearing 4-6. Anderson also set new bests in triple jump and the 100 hurdles. Her time in the 100 hurdles was 20.37 and she left a mark at 28-0 in triple jump.

Freshman Gracie Honey finished eighth in the 1600 with a time of 6:34 and ninth in the 800 with a time of 2:59.6.

The short relay team consisting of Leslie Young, Maddie Williamson, Allie Kunze, and Smith took eighth with a time of 59.94.

Freshman Giona Lamb took ninth in javelin, setting a new personal best of 87-5.

Young, a senior, took tenth in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 1:02.2.
