Derailment!

Burlington Northern crews expected to finish clearing away the wreckage of an 18-car freight train derailment by about midnight last night. The 18 cars left the tracks about a mile east of Dodson Tuesday evening. Traffic on Highway 2 was diverted to the DY Junction at Malta all day Tuesday and into the night while crews worked. The wreckage included a pressured rail car containing chlorine, but no leaks were detected. A BN hazardous materials team was on site just in case. Other rail cars were carrying food and paper products. About 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from four refrigerator cars, but was expected to be cleaned up without any problem. No injuries were reported. Cause of the derailment is undetermined.

School Dress Code Reviewed By School Board, Administrators

Superintendent James C. Nordlund states that the Malta High School dress code was renewed at the April school board meeting. The present code which was adopted last fall by the student council and the Malta school board reads as follows:

“Dress Code for Girls: Dresses should be appropriate for teen-age girls. Skirts and dresses are recommended, however, skirt type culottes and pant suits are acceptable. The wearing of slacks to school should be reserved only for severe cold weather. Pin curls and scarves should not be worn during the regular school day.”

“Dress Code for Boys: General appearance is to be neat and clean, both in person and clothes. Hair should be kept reasonably trimmed and neat, without extremes in length. Faces should be kept clean shaven and side-burns should not be worn excessively long.”

“Both boys and girls are asked to refrain from wearing sweatshirts, jackets, etc., with insignias of other high schools. Boys should not wear underwear type ‘T’ shirts. Students on trips or attending school activities out of town should wear clothing that makes a good impression and represents Malta High School in the best possible way.”

The school board would like to see the parents and the students accept the responsibility for their cleanliness and appearance. It is the opinion of the board and the school administrators that student conduct is affected by their appearance and dress. The trustees realize that the students have basic rights as individuals.
