Local veterans react to news of Osama bin Laden’s death

The news of the death of Osama bin Laden got mixed reactions from veterans of Phillips County who served in Iraq.

Their reactions ranged from satisfaction to uncertainty.

Uncertainty is the predominant reaction by members of the 484th Military Police Combat Support Company headquartered in Malta.

The unit has been on alert to prepare for a possible activation and duty assignment to Afghanistan in May of 2012.

Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Troy Simanton said the unit will be closely watching the situation since the ongoing activities of the Taliban and al Qaida could possibly determine whether or not the unit might get called up.

Some were satisfied an apparently unreachable goal had been finally attained.

Council Had Varied Agenda

A variety of business was conducted at the Monday evening meeting of the Malta city council.

A used Case 440 tractor with mower and riding lawn mower have been purchased for use in the city.

It was reported that tree planting in the city park had been completed and that plumbing fixtures would be installed in the rest rooms soon. Ralph Young will remove the branches from Trafton Park which resulted from the tree trimming there so watering can begin.

City Engineer Bud Hasler asked that surplus machinery in storage, but not used by the city crew, be sold.

Bids for mosquito spray concentrate were opened and discussed and Sanfax 580 will be used in the city.

Riverside Motel managers were authorized to collect the $1 camping fee for Trafton Park campers through the summer.

Modern St. Patrick to Rid Fort Peck of Rattlesnakes

The War department has solicited the help of South Dakota’s “St. Patrick” to wage a one-man war on poisonous snakes at Ft. Peck Dam.

A.M. Jackley, state reptile control director, has been loaned to the U.S. Army Engineers for three weeks beginning about May 15. He will locate dens, organize “hunting parties” and demonstrate how to build snake traps for reptile eradication.

“Never has there been such a migration of rattlesnakes than has been caused by the impounding of water in Ft. Peck,” Jackley said. His mission for the War department will be to organize the citizens of the area in a campaign against the rattlers.

-Malta had decided to fix up a tourist park along the Milk River on the north side. R.M. Trafton had donated the use of the land for a period of 10 years. Growing tourist trade had stimulated the idea.

-The first annual spring field meet was scheduled to be held at the Malta High School with spelling contests, races, jumping contests, and a declamation contest. Grade school children from the entire county were invited.

-The Malta Fire Department had reorganized, electing Harry Lyden chief, G.L. Partridge, assistant chief, J.F. Murray, secretary, and F.W. St. Hill, treasurer. There were two hose carts, a chemical outfit and a number of men assigned to the fire line.

-White, Brown and Leahy of Great Falls had been awarded a contract to raise the Nelson reservoir dam. The job was let for $97,145. It would entail the moving of 410,000 cubic yards of dirt, 59,000 cubic yards of gravel and the construction of concrete structures.

-Jack Roadhouse, clerk and recorder, was the first man in the county to pay his bachelor tax.

-Miss Lily Edwards had won a declamation contest at the high school and would represent Malta at Havre. Miss Verna Erickson won typewriting honors.

-Phil Caselberg had purchased the Dan McKay brickyard and equipment. The machinery would be operated by steam or horses and had an output of 20,000 bricks a day.

-A farm institute had been held in Malta, and editor Stevens commented thusly, “A few years hence, there will be no great herds of cattle or bands of sheep grazing on the open range near Malta. The stockmen will be forced to a distance because of lack of range. The small rancher will fence his stock in; raise his feed; have a grove of trees surrounding his buildings. He will continue to prosper and enjoy life as he does not now ever dream of.”
