PC Teams compete at Cal Wearley

The Malta, Dodson, and Saco Track teams participated in the Cal Wearley Memorial Track Meet last Tuesday, April 27, in Havre, and three of six teams placed high in the meet which featured over 20 schools.

The team also went to Great Falls for the Fairfield Belt Invitational on Saturday, May 1.

The M-ettes placed highest amongst Phillips County teams at the Cal Wearley, placing second in the girls' meet with 59 points. The Saco Lady Panthers weren't too far behind, placing fourth with 46 points.

The Mustangs were the only Phillips County Team to score in the boys meet, finishing sixth with 35 points

Fort Benton won both events, the Longhorn boys had 124.5 points, while the Lady Longhorns had 75.

M-ETTES @ Cal Wearley

The M-ettes were led by senior Erica Smith, who won triple jump with a length of 33-3.50, a mark that she set in prelims. Smith took second in javelin with a personal best of 105-7.

"It was a nice day out, so I knew that it would be a good day to compete and I was striving to punch my ticket to state," Smith said. "I was ready."

Smith placed fourth in long jump with a season's best of 15-9, a mark that qualified her for state.

She also placed sixth in the 100 with a time of 13.58.

Junior Justine Lamb set a new best of 5-2 in high jump and took second place. The accomplishment also qualified Lamb for state. Lamb had cleared the 5-0 height that she had been fighting to clear since her freshman season.

"I fully cleared 5-0, but then 5-2, I nicked it a little bit, so I had to throw myself off of the mat before it fell," Lamb said.

She also said that she wants to continue to do her best this season, trying hard to make it to state in other events.

Lamb also placed sixth in shot put with a throw of 31-9.5. She was also ninth in the 100 hurdles with a season's best of 18.29.

Sophomore Allie Kunze took second in triple jump with a personal best of 31-10.25. She was fourth in the 200 with a time of 28.52 in the finals. She entered the finals of long jump in tenth place, but placed sixth overall with a personal best of 15-2.75.

Tia Siewing placed third in shot put with a throw of 33-0 in the finals.

Laynee Ophus was fourth in high jump after clearing a personal best of 4-08.

Skylie Lefdahl placed fifth in shot put with a throw of 95-4. She was also ninth in shot put with a throw of 30-9.5.

Gracie Honey finished seventh in the 1600 with a time of 6:24.12, and ninth in the 800 with a time of 2:42.29.

Cede Meyer was tenth in triple jump after posting a mark of 29-2.50.

The short relay team consisting of Leslie Young, Madison Williamson, Kunze, and Smith finished eleventh with a time of 58.61.

MUSTANGS @ Cal Wearley

Junior Cash Salsbery took first place in shot put and discus with throws of 45-1, which was a new best and 148-3 respectively.

"In discus, I was kind of struggling because of the long time I took off, but I have been practicing pretty hard to get better," Salsbery said. "In shot put, I switched over to a spin, and I am hoping to throw 50 before districts."

Salsbery set a new best of 46-2 in shot put at the Fairfield Belt meet.

At the Cal Wearley, junior Rex Williamson was second in javelin after posting a throw of 141-11 in the finals, a new best. Williamson entered the finals ninth with a throw of 124-7.

Williamson was tenth in long jump with a new best of 18-11.

Junior David Pitman placed sixth in shot put and discus. He set a personal best of 40-6 in shot put and had a throw of 127-3 in discus.

The PCN caught up with Malta senior RC Skiff at track practice to see how he felt the season was going.

"We didn't get to do anything last year and I was really looking forward to track last year," Skiff said.

Skiff has been competing in the 100, 200, and 400 events, this season, with a handle bar mustache.

"My friends at school told me that I wouldn't do it," Skiff said. "So then I did it."

As far as competing goes, Skiff has set a new best in the 100 (12.64) at the Havre Lions Meet, and in the 400 (1:01.65) at the Fergus Invitational.

"The year started off slow, but my times have been getting better towards the end of the year," Skiff said.

Skiff's goal for the season includes making it to state in the 100 and 400 events.

Junior Eion Estill has been competing in throwing events this season, and feels the season is going well.

"I haven't been doing as well as I had hoped in discus, but in shot put and javelin, I feel like I have been doing pretty good," Estill said.

Estill set a new best of 36-0.25 at the Fairfield Belt meet and he set a personal best of 96-1 in javelin at the Cal Wearley Invitational.

"After doing practically nothing last year, it was kind of weird getting back into track, but I kind of like it, it has been fun," Estill said.

Estill also said that he hasn't set any goals for himself except for doing the best that he could.

At the Cal Wearley meet, the short relay team consisting of Salsbery, Kyle Darrington, Williamson, and Gavin Slade took sixth with a time of 47.75.

The long relay team consisting of Williamson, Connor Tuss, Slade, and Darrington finished seventh with a time of 4:02.44.

Slade was tenth in javelin with a throw of 124-10.
