M-ettes second at District event

The Malta M-ettes track team was six points shy of winning the 2B District championship last Saturday, May 15, scoring 165 points, while the Glasgow Lady Scotties won with 170.

The hometown Wolf Point Lady Wolves were third with 92 points, the Poplar Lady Indians were fourth with 50 points, and the Harlem Lady Cats were fifth with 35 points.

At the meet, 13 M-ettes qualified to compete at the Northern B Divisional set to be held in Glasgow on Saturday, May 22.

"We have a lot of people that are in the top ten of a lot of events, so that's awesome to see," Malta senior Erica Smith said when asked about her team. "I am glad that they are doing well and that they have been setting PRs (personal records). I am proud of them."

The M-ettes were led by Smith, who won the long jump and triple jump events, winning district titles in those events for three out of three possible times in her high school career.

Smith won the long jump with a season's best of 16-1.

"I was really hoping to break past 16 foot and I finally did, so I am pretty happy about it," Smith said. "I hit my board pretty good and I felt myself stretching and reaching to go further."

She won the triple jump with a mark at 32-6. She took second place in javelin with a throw of 104-8. She was third in the 100 with a time of 13.60.

Smith felt that the weather helped her compete well, but she also had to make sure that she stayed warmed up competition-wise.

Tia Siewing was first in shot put with a throw of 32-10 and was sixth in discus with a personal best of 80-5.

Junior Skylie Lefdahl won discus with a throw of 94-2. The throw came on her last attempt.

"My first five throws, I could not figure out my footing and on my last one I finally figured it out," Lefdahl said.

Sophomore Allison Kunze was second in the 200 with a time of 28.29, second in long jump with a leap of 15-1, and third in triple jump with a mark left at 31-3.

The short relay team consisting of Leslie Young, Madison Williamson, Kunze, and Smith was second with a time of 53.42. The long relay consisting of Addison Ulrich, Lefdahl, Gracie Honey, and Kunze took third with a time of 4:34.85.

Sophomore Addy Anderson was second in the 100 meter hurdles with a new best of 18.37. She was third in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 53.51, third in high jump by clearing 4-6, and fifth in triple jump with a mark at 29-9.5.

Freshman Giona Lamb was second in shot put with a personal best of 31-4. She also set a new best of 94-6 in javelin, a mark which earned her third place.

Lauren Tuss qualified in all three throwing events, taking second in discus with a throw of 88-11, fourth in shot put with a personal best of 30-5., and fourth in javelin with a throw of 92-6.

Sophomore Maddie Williamson took second in the triple jump with a personal best of 32-4.25.

Freshman Gracie Honey was third in the 800 with a new personal best of 2:35.59. Honey started the race at a quick pace, but managed to hold the third position throughout the race.

"My mom (Sarah Honey) said to finish in the top three, so I did that," Honey said. "I like to speed up on the first turn so that I am not dead last because it's harder to pass people later in the race."

Sophomore Rylee Hines qualified in discus with a personal best of 80-10, placing fifth in the event.

Senior Leslie Young qualified in the 300 hurdles with a personal best of 55.91.
