She’s a National Super Saver

Kyleigh Schipman, a Malta grade school student, has been selected as a Super Saver in the National Super Saver Contest.

She was selected from among more than 4,000 children grades K-8 who qualified for the contest. Children qualified by making 10 or more savings deposits at school during the current year’s school banking program, sponsored by First Security Bank.

Schipman was awarded a Super Saver Certificate of Achievement and a $150 gift certificate presented by bank president Gary Howell.

Malta Boys Win Five Events, Divisional Title

11 Qualify for State

Malta speedster Matthew Brookie continued his domination of the 100 and 200 meters with wins in both events as the Mustangs claimed the team title at the Northern Divisional Track and Field Meet Saturday in Glasgow.

Brookie improved on his school-record 100-meter time with a 10.93 mark and set a new District 2B record in the 200 meters with a time of 22.44.

The Mustangs got good support as Hank Oyler placed second in the discus with a mark of 114’ 10” and Tucker Schye placed fourth at 114’ 3”.

Sam Peterson and Jake Bushman finished second and third in the triple jump with marks of 40’ 7 ¼” and 39’ 8”, respectively.

In other events, Jade Olson placed third in the 100 meters at 11.16; Tate Carney with fourth in the 1600 meters at 5:13.7. He was also third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.3; Kaden Bedwell was third in the javelin with a mark of 154’ 8”.

Jake Bushman placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 44.91 time. Bedwell tied for sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 10’.

Malta’s 1600 meter relay team consisting of Brookie, Danny Salveson, Carney, and Olson placed third with a time of 3:50.65. The top six placer move on to the state meet this week.

Three Local Teens Claim K of C Free-throw Titles

Three Malta teenagers have won state titles in the Knights of Columbus Free-throw Championship—two of them for the third consecutive year.

Stacey Nevrivy not only won the 14-year-old girl’s title but was one of two state title winners (both girls) who shot perfect 25 for 25 scores.

R.J. Tollefson won the 13-year-old boys title with a 22 score to record his third straight state title.

Juliann Keller earned the state title in the 12-year-old category with a 21 score.

Stacey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Nevrivy; R.J. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Rocky Tollefson and Juliann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Keller of Malta.

Malta Sends 12 to Class B Track Meet in Bozeman

Malta had a good showing in the very windy North-East B Divisional track meet Saturday at Havre and will send several athletes to the state track meet this Friday and Saturday in Bozeman.

In all, six M’ettes qualified for state in 10 events while seven Mustangs advanced in five events.

Individually for the M’ettes, seniors Linda Cummings won the shotput, and Laura Matthews won the javelin on her final throw to enter the state meet as champions.

Cummings, as well as runner-up Matthews, each had career-high throws in the shotput, Cummings won the event with a toss of 40-9 and Matthews had a 37-8.

Mustangs Jason Pekovitch and Kelly Kuszmaul also had career-best throws in the discus and finished fifth and sixth.

Josh Otteson was Malta’s only individual champion with a gold medal in the javelin. 184’ 7”.

Paper Rates Will Increase on July 1

Because of recent increases in postal rates and the increased cost of materials and everything else needed to produce our newspaper, effective July 1, the price of the Phillips County News will be increased. Copies purchased individually over-the-counter will be 15 cents and subscription rates will go up $1 per year.

From now until July 1, we will welcome subscription renewals at the old price. You may subscribe for more than one year if you wish. After July 1, however, the price for a one-year subscription in Phillips County will be $5.50, outside Phillips County, but in Montana $6.00, and outside Montana $6.50.

We have studied the prices charged by other weekly papers in the state and find out that our new rates will be in line with what most papers are charging. Quite a few papers are now charging 15 cents per copy and one, (Scobey) charges 25 cents.

We’re not overly enthusiastic about this price increase, but feel that we must try to keep up with inflation. Even a cup of restaurant coffee costs 15 cents most places in town!

Malta Third in State Track Meet

The third-place trophy in Class B competition went to the Malta Mustangs last Saturday at the conclusion of the state track meet held in Billings.

Craig Stiles won his fourth consecutive Class B javelin crown with a 218’11” toss. Cold, wet, and windy weather didn’t help the cause any, and the 242’7” state record Stiles established as a high school sophomore continues to hold.

Mustang Duane Walker qualified in five events for the state meet and had a busy day, Saturday, as he placed in each event. He was second in the javelin with a throw of 183’; third in the shot put; tied for fourth in the high jump, and was fifth in both the long jump and discus.

Bill Cole was third in the discus event with a throw of 141’9”. Mervin Bishop competed in the mile run and Stiles also participated in the pole vault.

Prisoners Arrive For Thinning Of Sugar Beets

Two hundred and twenty-nine German prisoners of war arrived at the Malta camp the first of the week for work in the sugar beet fields of the county. The prisoners were accompanied by 20 guards and two officers.

Woman’s Softball League Organized For Season

A woman’s softball league was organized Monday evening with Corrine Granlund elected captain of the team. Lou Perry and Joe Baginski will coach the team.

The first practice was held to pick team positions. Charter players are Beulah Murray, Marge Brown, Irene Nally, Lillian Olson, Rita Maloney, Corrine Granlund, Wilmagene Cotter, Peggy Cruikshank, Margaret Windschitl, Rosemary Touschette, Ida Faye Piper, Mable Dufloth, Vi Harper, and Adeline Rummel.

This is the first woman’s softball team ever organized in Malta.

-Commander R.F. Herdman was to be marshal of the day at the American Legion-sponsored Memorial Day services. Judge Borton of Glasgow was to be the speaker. A game between Malta and Harlem Legion teams was scheduled for the afternoon.

-R.M. Trafton, on his way home from California, was taken ill at Missoula.

-Mayor John Survant had requested all business houses to close from 12 until 6 p.m. Memorial Day.

-George and Bernard Koke had received a pair of alligators from their aunt, who had spent the winter in Florida. One had not been able to stand the trip, but the other was alive and on display in a local window.

1903

-The Great Northern had published a 32-page booklet extolling the beauties and advantages of northern Montana. Malta was described as a thriving town of 300 people, second largest in Valley County, and the center of a vast stock-raising empire. Saco was a village of 100 with thousands of acres of irrigable hay land adjacent.

-Max Sklower, manager of the White Sulphur Springs hotel for 16 years, had announced that he would erect a three-story brick building, “where the Cowan house now stands”, for a hotel. The building was to contain rooms, baths, a barbershop, a bar, a sample room, sewage and running water, steam heat, and a full basement. The estimated cost was $30,000.

-“Brother Van” was scheduled to give a Memorial Day address.
