Veseths Retire From Show Business

Fifty years in the theatre business in Malta will end this weekend for Carl Veseth.

With the final performance at the Valli Drive-in this Saturday night, the Veseths have stated that the Villa Theatre in Malta will not be opened next summer.

Carl Veseth came to Malta on July 4, 1921. He opened the Palace Theater in the building on Central Avenue built by his father, Ole Veseth. During the years of the Palace Theatre, talking pictures and air conditioning were introduced by the Veseths. In recent years, they built the new Villa and Valli Theatres.

Mr. and Mrs. Veseth will vacation for a while at Flathead Lake. Their plans for the future are indefinite at this time.

New Sign

A new time and temperature sign was erected on the southwest corner of the First State Bank on Tuesday of this week.

The sign intermittently flashes the correct time and temperature in bright lights visible both night and day, and is an attractive addition to the downtown Malta area.

Gold Mining is Resumed in Little Rocky Mountains

The mining camp of Zortman, 50 miles southwest of Malta in the Little Rocky Mountains, which probably holds some kind of a record for having alternated between a boom town and a ghost town more times than any mining camp in the state, is edging towards a boom again after languishing in a ghost town existence since emergency orders placed a ban on gold mining operations back in 1942.

Three shifts of miners are working, the big cyanide mill is in operation again and a shipment of gold has been made. The town of Zortman, itself, is reviving again. A cabin camp has opened, a garage, a restaurant established, and the empty cabins in Ruby Gulch are showing signs of habitation as miners’ families move back.

Resumption of work at Ruby Gulch this summer is under the direction of Ed Sholz of Whitehall, as general manager. August Ramboseck of Eureka as superintendent and Max P. Klimper of Zortman as mill superintendent. The greater share of the stock is owned by Mrs. Katie B. Whitcomb, widow of the late Charles Whitcomb, and members of her family.

Malta’s Water Supply Unlimited For Any Use

While many other cities and towns are hoarding their water supplies, rationing its use for irrigation of gardens and urging their citizens to conserve, the residents of Malta, with an unlimited supply at their disposal, are splashing around using more than 750,000 gallons per day, according to figures from the city office.

The latest estimate places Malta’s population at 2,800. At this rate, an average of about 296 gallons of water per day is used by every man, woman, and child in the city.

The city well, located at the end of Fifth Avenue, has been producing a steady and undiminished flow of water so pure it has never been necessary to treat it with chemicals, since 1913. The well is 41 feet deep and 15 feet in circumference. It is curbed with concrete. An electric pump with a capacity of 750 gallons per minute pumps the water to a storage tank on a hill south of town.
