City has questions about proposed meter formula, plans work meeting

The Malta City Council Tuesday night took a look at a proposed formula for billing water use utilizing meters.

Harry Whalen of Montana Rural Water presented the council with a billing system which he developed, and that he said is being used by 80 percent of municipalities in the state.

“It’s a fair and equitable way to charge for water,” Whalen said.

Whalen said meters are “the only fair way to go,” noting that water users waste a lot of water.

He said the household that only uses the average 6,000 gallons a month will be looking at a bill of $25 a month.

Mayor Shyla Jones suggested a work meeting be held Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. The meeting would be open to the public, but no action will be taken at that time.

Mustangs jump on Shepherd, take 2-0 record to Cut Bank next

The 2-0 Malta Mustangs will travel to Cut Bank Friday night for a non-conference match with the District 1B Wolves.

Malta jumped on the Shepherd Mustangs Saturday afternoon as junior Tucker Schye scooped up a short line-drive opening kickoff and went 74 yards for a touchdown while the scoreboard clock managed to tick off only 14 seconds.

The Mustangs went on to win their homecoming contest 48-6.

Buttreys offers a $5,000 challenge

Buttrey Food and Drug Stores Company celebrated the grand re-opening of its “Buttrey Fresh Foods” store in Malta with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today at 9 a.m. attended by local dignitaries and Buttrey associates.

Store manager Wanita Anderson has run the Malta Buttrey store since 1991.

In celebration of the newly renovated store, Buttrey is offering to donate five percent of the sales generated for the first seven days of the grand opening celebration to the Malta High School Building Fund.

“We are proud to have been a part of the Malta community since 1930,” continued Fernandez, “In fact, we want to share even more of our grand re-opening success, so I issue this challenge: If customers can raise $5,000 through their store purchases, we will double the donation. We will post daily results at our store so all of us can keep track of how well we are doing in our drive to raise money for this great cause.”

Assault charges are filed

A felony assault charge has been filed against a Malta man.

Johnny Ray Niles, Malta, was charged with felony assault in an information filed Tuesday in 17th Judicial District Court by Deputy County Attorney Dan O’Brien.

The information alleges that Niles entered the store at the Sleeping Buffalo Resort on Sept. 8 and pointed a rifle directly at the chest of the proprietor, Roger Ereaux.

It further alleges that the man told Ereaux to start praying.

The man then left the store, got into his pickup, and drove to the parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office in Malta where he was arrested.

He is alleged to have told a deputy he only wanted to scare his victim.

Buick Showing is Today, Not Saturday

The 1972 Buick new car showing is today, Thursday, Sept. 23. The date was given wrong in last week’s paper, so we hope no one misses the showing by the Malta Auto Company today.

They will be showing the new models at the garage and serving coffee and doughnuts until 4:30 p.m.

The other dealers in General Motors cars are also having their showings today, so it will be a good day for coffee and “eats” around town.

Bowling Alleys Being Installed At Kid Curry’s

The best recreational center in eastern Montana is the goal of John Overberg, operator of Kid Curry’s nightclub, he said recently. In addition to dancing and refreshments, Overberg is planning on opening a four alley bowling center, and making the ballroom floor available to roller skaters, some nights of the week.

To bring this about, a 94-foot by 46-foot addition is being erected. “The dance floor is closed until the addition is completed,” he said, “but the bar will remain open. The bar will continue to be separated from the dance floor and the alleys will also be a separate unit. We hope,” said Overberg, “to hold our grand opening within a short time.”

Football Team Prepares For Havre

Practice Sessions Are Being Held Under Lights

The Malta Mustang football team held their first practice session under the lights last Tuesday night, in preparation for the first game of the season, Coach “Bun” Lodge said Wednesday. In order to become accustomed to playing night games, one night each week will be devoted to practice under the lights.

With 35 men reporting for practice, and a line that may average over 170 pounds, Lodge will still make no comment as to the prospects for a good season. “We can tell better,” says Lodge, “how things shape up, after the Havre game.”

Good Prospects for School Band, Says Director

Excellent prospects for a rejuvenated Mustang band are reported this week by Alfred Ventur, Malta high school music director.

With a turnout of 65 candidates for the beginners’ class and about 30 members of the advanced group, Ventur thought he had a good chance to form a band of 50 pieces.

100 Years Ago - 1921

- On a special train to Havre, and carrying a banner labeled, “We Want Water – Malta,” a local delegation left for Havre to meet with the International Joint Commission which was dividing the St. Mary’s irrigation water with Canada. The delegation was composed of J.F. Kilduff, John Survant, H.S. Whitcomb, H.G. Robinson, H.M. Kirton, A.F. Winkler, Ed Pierson, Wilford Primeau, Xavier Plouffe, R.L. Campbell, John Hardin, Adolph LaFond, Nick Schmitz, and Archie Hould.

- There was bad rustler trouble afoot, with cattle bearing strange brands found on the county line. Tom Johnson and Everett Thompson were doing the sleuthing.

- Judge C.D. Borton arrived in town by train, having left his car in Saco because of road conditions. He was en-route to Helena to hold court.

- A suspicion of backward progress was noted in William Russell’s advertised offer to trade “a good Ford car” for some horses.

118 Years Ago – 1903

- A “boilerplate” feature writer had made up his mind that the automobile was no longer an experiment and was here to stay. He remarked somewhat tartly that the stage was to be avenged on the railroad by the motor car! Nationally the coal operators had defied the nation’s laws and refused information on the workings of their companies.

- Belligerent service was the keynote of Arthur Keller’s blacksmith business. Under the heading “I’m Doing The Biz,” he advertised, “Anything in the blacksmith repair line, carriage painting, etc., can be done in my shop without delay. If two men can’t do it quick enough, I’ll hire a dozen.”

- Brickwork on the new hotel was at a standstill owing to a shortage of bricks.

- Puck Powell, Elmer Richards, and Al Haley had been hunting on Bowdoin Lake and brought back tall tales of their prowess with the scattergun. Puck acted as retriever. His companions thought him a little too fat for the job but thought he might make good after he got over being water-shy.

- A crime wave note involved Richard O’Dare who was given 90 days in the county bastille. Execution of the sentence was deferred for 12 hours, with the malefactor being given a chance to analyze his predicament. He did. He took off for greener pastures and with him went some other characters who left without being asked.
