Mavs defeat two of three opponents last week

The North Country Mavericks were able to win two of three games last week, falling to Malta last Thursday, October 14, but picking up a win against MonDak on Friday, October 15, and another against Culbertson on Saturday, October 16.

The Mavericks will have only one game this week, a game in Nashua on Tuesday, October 19, set to start at 5 p.m.

The team fell to Malta, but nearly pushed the M-ettes to a fifth set. The scores were; NC-20 M-25, NC-19 M-25, NC-25 M-11, and NC-23 M-25.

The Mavs were led by Paige Wasson who had 12 kills and eight digs. Jaycee Erickson had nine assists and five aces. Teagan Erickson had seven kills and two blocks. Zandora Longtree had nine assists.

Mavericks Head Coach Charlene Wasson said that the team went into the Malta game with a few goals, the first of which was to play better than they did against Malta earlier this season.

“I feel like we competed in this match even coming away with a loss,” Coach Wasson said. “We also got to see the return of two of our players Kendall Scheffelmear and Cienna Strommen. I saw a lot of growth in all the players on the floor and on the bench.”

Coach Wasson also said that the team has been intentional about creating connections with teammates by communication and concentration. She admitted that practices were slow this week, which possibly led to their slow start against Malta.

“I also told them they did a great job of staying focused and getting themselves out of the holes that they dug themselves into early in the match,” Coach Wasson said. “We have been improving all season long in all areas of the game and after this match, I can see we are very close to firing on all cylinders.”

The team continued to work on their communication during the win against MonDak. The scores were NC 25-MD 12, NC 25-MD 17, and NC 25-MD 9.

T. Erickson and Wasson each had six kills. J. Erickson served five aces and had 12 assists. Kora LaBrie had 12 digs.

“This weekend of play was also very emotional since it was senior night in Saco Friday and Hinsdale Saturday,” Coach Wasson said. “We came away with a solid victory in this match.”

Though Culbertson had only lost two matches this season, Coach Wasson didn’t know what to expect going into the match. She was pleasantly surprised.

“This match was the best match the Mavericks have played all season long,” Coach Wasson said. “Each position on the floor was in tune with the game and ready to play. Our hitters had a great night at the net and our servers did an excellent job getting the ball over the net.”

The scores were NC 25-C 11, NC 25-C 12, and NC 25-C 17.

T. Erickson led the Mavericks with 12 kills and four blocks. LaBrie had 12 digs. Wasson had 10 kills and four blocks. J. Erickson had 12 assists.
