Council takes on trails proposal

The Malta City Council meeting started out sedately as the members worked their way through routine departmental reports and moved on to new business.

The Council then moved on to the issue of the proposed Malta Trails route circumnavigating the City limits – which became a little acrimonious and lengthy – as proponents of the trail implied the City was apparently blocking the development by citing insurance and easement control concerns.

Laura Pankratz displayed a map of the route and asked for support for the 2.5-mile route citing a lack of recreational opportunities which would be satisfied by the creation of a hiking trail.

After a lengthy discussion, the City Council voted to schedule a meeting with the Phillips County Board of Commissioners.

County Commission Chairman Troy Blunt told the PC News the Malta City Council met with commissioners Monday morning and it was agreed the two entities would work with the Malta Trails group to iron out easement and insurance issues so the group can proceed.

Local Thefts Admitted By Dakota Boy

A more or less routine arrest for a minor traffic mishap brought trouble to Donald J. Peterson this week as he pleaded guilty to grand larceny Tuesday and was sentenced by Judge John Hurly to three years in the state penitentiary.

Hailing from Berthold, ND, Peterson, aged 20, came here a month ago driving a car stolen from a Berthold school teacher.

The theft was discovered here when Peterson’s license plates were checked following his arrest on a traffic charge. Employed as a laborer on two local farms, the young man apparently spent his nights stealing from parked automobiles whose incautious owners left them unlocked.

Police Chief A.W. Pray obtained a confession from the boy that cleared up numerous petty robberies which have been reported here in recent weeks. Peterson confessed to taking articles from seven automobiles in Malta in addition to the theft of cash from at least two fellow workers.

Two School Dances Are Scheduled for This Week
