MHS Speech and Drama meet

Malta High School played host to 12 other schools and around 50-60 kids on Saturday, November 20, for its Speech and Drama Invitational.

The small but mighty Malta team of two held their own in the speech categories, coming away with a third-place team finish.

Izzie Hallenberg competes in the Dramatic Oral Interpretation (DOI) category.

"The piece I present is about a girl that is abused by her partner Zak," said Hallenberg. "DOI is the much heavier side of speech. More dramatic. I can't have a costume or use props. I have to mime or express any items and/or my surroundings."

The Malta meet was the third meet of the year for Izzie. The first meet of the year was at Cut Bank and she got second place.

"I was really nervous for the first meet, but happy with the second place," said Izzie.

The second meet of the year was at Glasgow. Izzie got a fourth-place there.

"The Glasgow meet was just rough. That's all I can say, it was a rough meet," said Hallenberg.

The other member of the Malta team is Emily Rettinger. She competes in the Humorous Oral Interpretation (HOI).

"My piece is about a girl holding an envelope that holds the answer to whether she has been accepted into her dream college of choice," said Rettinger. "The HOI is a much lighter side of speech. More comedy."

Rettinger did not compete at the Cut Bank meet.

"The Glasgow meet was my first ever competition for speech," said Emily. "I was so nervous. I was really happy that I placed fifth, but my goal is to do much better."

At the awards ceremony, Malta Coach and hostess for the event, Mrs. Anna LaBrie thanked everyone for coming.

"I'm so excited to see all of you and all of my coaching friends that I haven't seen in a long while," said LaBrie.

In the categories that our Malta duo competed in, Emily got fifth in HOI and Izzie got second place in the DOI category. Giving them the third-place team finish overall in the Class B Speech category. Second place went to Shelby, and first place went to Glasgow.

In Class C Speech, first place went to Fort Benton, second to North Star, and third went to Chinook.

In the Class B Drama category, Forsyth took first place, followed by Shelby in second, and Conrad in third.

Class C Drama had Hays-Lodgepole getting first, Simms in second, and North Star in third.

"The girls did really well," said LaBrie. "I'm very proud of them. Third place with 11 points from two girls is a great result."

The next meet for Malta's Dramatic Duo will be at Fort Benton on December 18.

Malta will present its musical, The Wind in the Willows, this coming Monday and Tuesday, November 29 and 30 in the Malta Auditorium.
