Busy woman finds joy in discarded dolls

‘So somebody else can enjoy them’

When the season gets busy, Sharon Kindle of Malta just gets busier.

Active in community affairs ranging from handling publicity for Phillips County Motor Sports to baking cupcakes and shepherding a bunch of Venture Scouts doing a chili benefit for the local Food Bank, Kindle also finds time to regularly rummage through the items donated to Malta Opportunites, Inc., looking for the odd Barbie doll or two, and other dolls as well.

She takes them home, cleans them thoroughly using a Purex wipe, then stitches a new outfit for each before each gets a new hair styling. The dolls are left for a day in a plastic bag with Febreeze to remove any lingering odors.

Her final step is to drop them off at the Malta Food Bank “so somebody else can enjoy them.”

Kindle said her reward is to see the look on the faces of the children.

When it comes to fudge, Suzie knows her stuff

There’s a secret behind Suzie Oxarart’s Cow Pie Fudge and her other culinary chocolate creations.

It’s not the ingredients, necessarily, it’s her confession: “I don’t eat my chocolate.”

Oh, she’s got her secret ingredients, but it’s her admission that, for health reasons, she can’t eat her own creations which surprises the people who line up to make a purchase.

Suzie, a rancher’s wife, has been cooking up chocolate delights in her home kitchen for probably 20 years or more.

Her trademark is her one-pound Cow Pie Fudge boxes, featuring both Bull Pie and “Heffer” Pie versions (with or without nuts).

Former miner purchases Malta Tire

Laid-off miners have been forced to look elsewhere by slowdowns and shutdowns at the local mine and John Hofer is one of them.

But Hofer has landed on his feet, purchasing an existing business, and has no plans to go back to mining when the mine reopens.

Hofer recently purchased Malta Tire from Ned Mangis.

Mangis operated the business for 24 years. The tire business was originally located in a building across the street to the north of Delta Ford but moved to its current location on Highway 2 near the underpass in 1989.

Hofer plans to expand the business to include minor repair work on all types of outfits.

Malta Is “Full Stop” For Amtrak

R.D. Brandt, Burlington Northern agent in Malta, reports that it has been confirmed by the railroad that Malta is a flag stop for revenue passengers to any point on Amtrack.

This order replaces the designation of Malta as a “conditional” stop when the train would stop only for passengers going as far west as Spokane or as far east as Minneapolis. Reservations are required to all points, Brandt added. Station hours on Saturday and Sunday are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The westbound train leaves Malta at 1:59 p.m. The eastbound leaves Malta at 12:40 p.m.

All Parallel Parking in City Effective Monday Morning

The Malta City Council Monday night passed ordinances that establish parallel parking on all streets in Malta and set speed limits on all Malta streets at 25 mph except in school or hospital zones.

The parallel parking ordinance will go into effect on Monday morning, Dec. 20, and as of that morning, all vehicles in the city will be required to park parallel with the curbs. The ordinance also requires that vehicles park in the direction of lawful traffic movement and that the right-hand wheels of the vehicle be within 18 inches of the curb or edge of the street or highway.

School Bus And Car Damaged In Collision

The Malta school bus and a car owned by Clyde Waters were damaged in a street accident at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Survant Street Friday afternoon.

Children from the rural Malta area were taken home by taxi and private cars. Earl Hanson, the bus driver, was going to the grade school after the children when the accident occurred.

The car, a 1946 model, driven by Harley Waters was badly damaged. No one was injured in the accident.

Mustangs To Make Road Trip Friday And Saturday

The Malta Mustangs will try the road again this weekend when they are scheduled to meet Wolf Point there Friday night, and then tackle the Frazer outfit on their home court on Saturday night. The Mustangs have not made a road trip this season, as icy roads prevented them from completing their engagement with Hinsdale last week.

This week the squad is undergoing a complete shakeup, due to their dismal showing against Dodson last week. As yet, the starters of the next games are not known, and Coach “Bun” Lodge says that the only man sure of his position on the team is the water boy.

Dodson Wallops Harlem and St. Paul’s Hoopsters

Saturday night the Dodson High School basketball five handed St. Paul’s Indians a drubbing to the tune of 59 to 23 on the Dodson floor. The high point man for Dodson, Leonard Boos, accounted for eighteen points while Turntoes for St. Paul’s chalked up thirteen markers.

On Tuesday night, Harlem met a worse fate on their own court when the Coyotes handed them an 8 to 56 defeat. Boos of Dodson led the scoring with 13 points.

118 Years Ago – 1903

- A copy of the Montana State prize song had been received at the editorial offices of the Malta Enterprise. Editor Smiley commented suspiciously on the unusual fact that a Missoula woman had written the words and an Anaconda violinist had written the music, unknown to each other. The prize money was split between them.

- The 18-piece Malta band was thanking local businessmen for contributions amounting to $110. Among members of the band are the names of Josef Sklower, William McLellan, C.E. Secrest, Dwight Jones, Dr. G.W. Clay, and Olaf Erickson.

- The Malta and Alder Gulch stage line, owned and operated by Louis Goslin, was making regular passenger and express trips to the Little Rockies. The stage left Malta Mondays and Thursdays for Phillips, the Circle C Ranch, and Alder Gulch, returning to Malta Tuesdays and Fridays of each week.

- J.A. Remple was perturbed over malicious rumors that his horses were suffering from pink eye or distemper. He explained that in a rush of business, his horses had to be put in a corral to make room for public horses and that, used to sleeping in the barn, his animals all got bad colds.
