Mustang Wrestling in Action at CMR Holiday Classic

The Mustang grapplers took to the mat in Great Falls this past Friday and Saturday, December 17 and 18, for the CMR Holiday Classic.

This was a large tournament with teams ranging from Class AA to Class C. 54 boys teams and 27 girls teams participated in the tournament.

The weekend tournament also allows the wrestlers to get a lot of matches in as there is a JV tournament called the Walt and Trudy Currie JV Tournament that is held on the 18th. Wrestlers that get knocked out of the Classic enter into that tournament.

"There can be a lot of really good wrestlers that end up over in the JV Tournament," said Mustang Head Coach Jake French.

Malta's 182 lb. wrestler, Junior Camryn Mears spent the entire tournament in the Holiday Classic finishing 4th in his weight class with a 4-2 record. Mears won his first two matches by pinfall and his third match by decision 7-4 before losing to the eventual tournament winner Austin Vanek of Cut Bank by pinfall. He then won his first match in the consolation bracket by pinfall before losing in a nail-biter by a 4-3 decision.

Junior 170 pounder Spencer Gibbs won his first match in the Classic by tech. fall 18-2 over Colter Lindsley of Belgrade before losing his next match. Gibbs won his first match in the consolation bracket by pinfall over Devron Brewer of Great Falls/MSDB before getting beat out of the Classic bracket in the next match, sending him into the JV bracket where he won his next three. The first by tech. fall 20-5 and the last two by pinfall to win the JV 170 lb. bracket.

Freshmen Kohner Schipman lost his first two matches in the Classic before finding his groove and winning his next three matches in the JV tourney. The first two by 7-0 and 6-0 decisions and the third by pinfall over Luke Widman of Missoula Sentinal. He lost in the championship match, finishing second in the 132 lb. class, by major decision 12-1 by Tre Antonioli of Butte.

Colton "Scuba" Mears found the going tough in the Classic, losing his first match in a close 6-4 decision and his second match by pin, sending him to the JV bracket on Saturday. "Scuba" won his first match there by major decision 15-5 over Hawken Haakanson of Harlem. He lost his next match and then rattled off four straight pins to take 3rd place in the 160 lb. bracket. His pins were over Zac Wells of Browning, Louie James of Ronan, Gavin Rowe of Butte, and Lincoln Reich of Chinook in the 3rd place match.

Mustang Heavyweight Tye Jones took 3rd place in the JV brackets with a pin or be pinned motto. Jones went 4-3 for the weekend with all but one match, a win due to injury, ending in a pinfall.

Taylin Johannesen took 4th in the JV brackets at the 145 lb. class following suit with Jones' pin or be pinned motto. Johannesen went 3-4 for the weekend with all matches ending in a pin.

The Mustang Wrestlers are in action again this Tuesday, December 21, in Glasgow for a dual meet.
