Senators nominate French to Us Academies

Senator Max Baucus has nominated Jaclyn French of Malta to the US Naval Academy at Annapolis.

French is a senior at Malta High School.

The senator nominated a total of 37 Montana seniors to the various military academies to which they have applied.

Sen. Jon Tester also announced that he has nominated French to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where she has also made application.

A nomination, usually from a member of Congress, is the first step in applying to attend a U.S. military academy.

Malta will send four to Helena for 50th Girls State Convention

Juniors Beth Atchley, Pam Holman, Alissa Taylor, and Katie McKeon will represent Malta High School as delegates to the 50th Anniversary Session of the Montana American Legion Auxiliary Girls State June 1-7, 1997 on the Carroll College campus in Helena.

Citizens of Girls State will not only review knowledge already acquired concerning the political machinery in the state, but they will perform exactly the same duties as real office holders in the everyday world.

They will elect their own officers in the manner prescribed by the Montana election procedure. They will set up their city government, pass and enforce their own ordinances. They will organize their own legislature where they will present and argue their own bills. They will have their own laws, enforced by their own officials. Each girl will have the opportunity to learn firsthand that government is just what she makes it.

The entire program is non-partisan. Political parties are called “Blue” and “Gold” and will be purely mythical and in no way connected with existing political parties. The sole purpose of the program is to enable the girls to grasp the meaning of governmental problems facing United States citizens today.

Mustangs win at Lewistown, enter break with 3-0 record

Although Malta got only four points from Kirk Stiles, the Mustangs used a balanced scoring attack, got help from the bench, and played its best defensive game of the year for a double-digit 51-38 victory at Lewistown Friday evening.

Malta played well defensively when it counted against the large Lewistown team, holding Lewistown to single-digit scoring in each of the first two quarters. Lewistown missed a lot of easy shots in the first half that went down more often in the second half.

The Mustangs take a 3-0 record into the Christmas break and will see action again on Jan. 3, when they travel to Chinook for a varsity tipoff. Malta will host Glasgow (in Saco) on Jan. 4, for a very important District 2B matchup.

There were 82 new civil action cases begun in 1971 as were 46 probate cases, seven criminal cases, and 16 juvenile cases.

New Bank Construction Progressing

Jack Kelly, President of the new First Security Bank of Malta, told the News this week that construction of the new bank building is progressing well, and since the building is now pretty well closed in and heated, the finishing work will start soon.

Among the items to be installed soon is the air-conditioning system. Some of the outside finishing work will be delayed until warmer weather.

Kelly also said that he has moved his temporary office to the rear of Rogers Motor Inn and may be contacted there.

Kelly said that the new bank is planning on being open prior to April 1.

State Production and Income Near Record Level

Montana’s production and its income from industry, finance, and commerce, while generally slightly under the 1942 production peak and the 1944 income peak, has continued at a near-record level, far in excess of the 1930s, the tenth annual edition of “Montana Production,” discloses.

Prepared at Montana State University by Dr. Roy J.W. Ely of the department of economics, the report reveals that income payments, despite a slight drop from the 1944 total of $549,000,000, actually were greater for all groups in 1945 except in the bracket of proprietors’ income. The 1945 total for all groups was $539,000,000.

Net salaries and wages and other labor income increased from $306,000,000 in 1944 to $319,000,000 in 1945, and dividends and interest increased from $40,000,000 to $43,000,000. Proprietors’ incomes however, dropped from $203,000,000 in 1944 to $177,000,000 in 1945, the report shows.

Stockmen Offered Surplus Potatoes for Feed

Bozeman – The government has made 225,000,000 pounds of potatoes available to Montana farmers and ranchers for livestock feed, R.J. McKenna, State Productions and Marketing Administration Director, announced.

The surplus government-owned potatoes are being made available, McKenna said, “in accord with the department of agriculture’s effort to obtain utilization of as great a portion of this year’s record crop as possible.”

Livestock growers may apply for the potatoes through county agricultural conservation associations.

From 1908:

A Childs Inquiry

A theatrical manager at the Players’ Club said of the school of classical dancing that Miss Isadora Duncan conducts:

“Miss Duncan hears some quaint remarks as she converses with her child pupils. One day, preparatory to the first lesson in a dolphin dance, she delivered to her class a little lecture on this fish. She described the grace of the dolphin, and afterward, she described its habits and mode of life.

“And, children,” she said, “a single dolphin will have 2,000 offspring.”

“A little girl gave a start.”

“And how about the married ones?” she gasped.

More one-liners from 1908:

To know how to wring victory from defeat, and make stepping-stones of our stumbling blocks, is true success.

As soon as one begins to love their work, then will they also begin to make progress.

When a woman has her hair fixed up, she is half-dressed.

This would be a brighter world if the people who can’t sing wouldn’t.
