Mustangs end 2021 with victory over Scotties in Glasgow

The Malta Mustangs Basketball team played their last game of 2021, with a barrage of three-pointers made in their 61-34 win over the Glasgow Scotties on Tuesday, December 22, in Glasgow.

The Mustangs will have a couple of weeks away from game action as they enter Winter Break. Their next game is scheduled to be in Rocky Boy, on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. After that game, they are scheduled to host Roundup on Saturday, January 8, at 5 p.m.

In Malta's win over Glasgow, the Mustangs were led by Rex Williamson, who scored 21 points. Williamson knocked three treys in the first quarter, and with two more coming from Jared Eggebrecht, and another from Connor Tuss.

Coach Costin was pleased that his team scored well around the perimeter, but he said that taking those shots made him nervous.

"You don't want to fall in love with those things, because it's pretty rare that you shoot it that well for a full game," Coach Costin said. "We did shoot well and Rex has really shot the ball well for us this season, so far."

In all, the Mustangs had 22 points in the first quarter, while only giving up 13. Malta also outscored the Scotties in the second quarter 14-6. Both teams had eight points in the third quarter. Malta's reserves shut the doors on the Scotties in the fourth quarter, accounting for 15 of the team's 17 points. Glasgow added seven to their tally.

"We are starting to defend pretty well," Coach Costin said. "We still have a ways to go but it's coming. I think our juniors are starting to step up."

Individual scoring included 21 points from Williamson. Eggebrecht had 10 points, Connor Tuss had nine points, Jonathan Siewing had eight points, Treyten Wilke had five points, Stockton Oxarart and Bodhi Brenden each had three points, and Carson Ottinger had two points.

"We are pretty deep with those freshmen and Carson Ottinger (sophomore)," Coach Costin said. "When they come in we don't drop off too much. A lot of times, you go to that bench and see a drop-off but we keep things rolling with our bench."

Coach Costin said that the team plans on working on details throughout Winter Break.
