Mustang Wrestlers Back in Action after Christmas Break

The Mustang Wrestlers got back on the mat after their Christmas break this past weekend with the CJI mixer in Chester on Thursday, January 6, and the Cut Bank Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 7-8.

“Our practices went really well over the break,” said Mustang Head Coach Jake French. “We picked up the intensity after Christmas, and the kids are starting to realize this last month is where we need to focus more and improve.”

The Cut Bank Invitational was won by the host team Cut Bank with 226 points. Havre took second with 198, and Jefferson High School got third with 150.5. Malta finished in 12th place out of the 23 teams that participated with a total of 57.5 points.

The Mustangs were led by their two captains over the three-day weekend, with Camryn “Reggie” Mears going 2-0 at the CJI mixer and 3-1 at the Cut Bank meet taking second place in the 182 weight class. Spencer Gibbs went 1-1 at the CJI mixer and 4-2 at the Cut Bank meet taking fourth place in the 170-pound weight class.

Malta’s lone senior, Shawn Gilkerson, didn’t participate in the CJI mixer, but went 3-3 at Cut Bank, and took sixth place in the 145-pound weight class.

Freshmen Kohner Schipman had a good weekend, going 3-0 at CJI and 2-2 at the Cut Bank meet in the 126-pound class.

Malta’s 160 pounder, Colton “Scuba” Mears, went 3-1 at CJI and 1-2 at Cut Bank.

Rounding out the weekend for the Mustang’s team were Colton Honey at 152 pounds and Taylin Johannesen in the 145-pound class. Both went 2-2 at the CJI mixer and 0-2 in Cut Bank.

The Mustangs were missing their heavyweight wrestler, Tye Jones, over the weekend due to an illness.

“I was happy overall with everyone on the weekend,” said French. “We saw some tough kids. We made some mistakes and we learned from them. The results from the tournament might not show it, but I think we did well and that tournament made us better. Hopefully, we do the same, if not more, in Miles City this coming weekend.”

Overall records for each wrestler through the Cut Bank Invitational:

Kohner Schipman 13-14

Shawn Gilkerson 8-5

Taylin Johannesen 10-20

Colton Honey 5-19

Colton Mears 15-19

Spencer Gibbs 20-12

Camryn Mears 22-7

Tye Jones 15-8

The Mustang wrestling team will be back in action this weekend, Friday and Saturday, January 14-15, at the Cowboy Invitational in Miles City. Followed by the Chinook Mixer on January 21 and the Harlem Tournament on January 22. Then home for the Malta mixer and tournament on January 28 and 29.
