Mustangs defeat Panthers, fall to Rocky Boy

The Malta Mustangs basketball team split a pair of games last week as they defeated the Roundup Panthers 82-42 in Roundup last Saturday, February 5, in Roundup, but fell 73-64 to Rocky Boy on Thursday, February 3, in Malta.

Malta is scheduled to play Poplar on Friday, February 11, at the MHS gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs will then face the Shelby Coyotes on Saturday, February 12, in Shelby, at 5:30 p.m. Malta lost 97-74 to Harlem in a make-up game last Monday, February 7. Details of that game will be in the February 16 issue of the PCN.

In Malta’s win over Roundup, the team was led by freshman Bohdi Brenden who had 19 points. Senior Rex Williamson and freshman Treyton Wilke each scored 14 points. Sophomore Carson Ottinger had 11 points. Juniors Jared Eggebrecht and Kaden Bishop both had nine points, and sophomore Jonathan Siewing had six points.

Malta led in quarter-by-quarter scoring, in each quarter; 15-12 in the first quarter, 20-11 in the second quarter, 28-10 in the third, and 19-9 in the fourth.

In Malta’s loss to Rocky Boy, the Mustangs were led by Brenden, who had 14 points. Ottinger had 11 points, Bishop had 10 points, Eggebrecht had eight points, Wilke had seven points and Siewing had four points.

The Mustangs fared better in their second meeting, after losing to Rocky Boy 71-50 in the first game earlier. Ultimately, Malta could not keep up with the Star’s offense, which was led by Joe Demontiney, who had 31 points.
