Lady Mavs first in 3C Tourney

North Country, Dodson still alive in postseason

The North Country Lady Mavericks and Dodson Lady Coyotes met each other in the semi-finals of the 3C District Tournament. The Lady Mavericks won 68-12, and despite the lopsided game, both Phillips County teams may see action in the Eastern C Divisional Tournament on Thursday, March 3, in Sidney.

The North Country Lady Mavericks have already earned a spot at the Eastern C, thanks to their 3C District run in which they defeated Scobey 59-22 in the 3C Championship game on Saturday, February 19, in Wolf Point.

"We have a lot to be proud of so far in our season being Conference and District Champions but we also still have a lot of hard work ahead of us to accomplish what we want to accomplish in our last two tournaments of the season," Lady Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson told the PCN.

The Lady Coyotes placed fourth in the 3C tournament, and have one last chance to get in by way of a challenge game on Friday, February 25. The Lady Coyotes will take on the Circle Wildcats who defeated Savage 23-19 in the 2C fifth-place game on Monday, February 21.

"I am kind of excited about it," Coach Clayton KillEagle said. "I feel confident and good about it. I also feel that it is only fair that we do get another chance to play a play-in game. We deserve to be there. With us taking three from our district and 2C taking five, it's only right that we get to challenge that fifth seed."

The Mavericks will face Froid-Lake, who was fourth in the 2C District Tournament on Thursday, March 3, at 6 p.m. If Dodson can defeat Circle, they will take on the 2C Champion Plentywood Wildcats at noon, also on March 3.

"The girls came out focused and ready to go this weekend at the District Tournament," Coach Erickson said. "They played great defense, shot the ball well, and had a ton of fun!"

The Lady Mavericks did not allow Dodson to score more than five points in three out of four quarters in their semifinal game on Thursday, February 17. The quarter-by-quarter scoring was 27-6, 18-2, 13-4, and 10-0.

DODSON LADY COYOTES

The Lady Coyotes went 2-2 at the 3C District Tournament, thanks to a rule change made last year, the Lady Coyotes will be able to challenge the fifth seed of the 2C District Tournament for a spot in the Eastern C Divisional.

"We feel very exhausted," Coach KillEagle said. "That was four games of some tough coaching. It was tough, stressful, fun. I just love my girls for everything they put out there."

Dodson defeated the Lustre Lady Lions 53-47 in the opening round of the 3C Tournament on Wednesday, February 16. The Lady Coyotes were led by Kataya KillEagle who had 19 points. In Dodson's consolation semifinal win over Frazer last Friday night, the score was 51-38. Kataya KillEagle had a game-leading 28 points. Fox had 13 points.
