On To State! Mustangs Open Against Whitehall

For the first time since 1999, the Malta Mustangs are going to state. A 44-38 victory over the Fairfield Eagles Saturday night in the Northern Divisional championship game ended the drought.

The Mustangs run up against Whitehall, the number three team from the southern division at 2 p.m. at the state tournament at MSU-Bozeman.

“They’re a very deliberate team,” Malta coach David Costin said Monday. “They like a slower pace and they’re going to play a lot of, probably exclusively, 3-2 zone.”

Dial Phones For Saco Announced; New Service to be Available on March 11

Dial telephone service will become available to Saco telephone subscribers on March 11, according to a statement made by R.M. Murray, Malta manager of the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company. Present telephone instruments will be replaced by dial telephones previous to that date and dial switching equipment will be installed in quarters specially designed for it, Murray said. The Saco Drug Company will become an agent for the telephone company as soon as the dial service is established, and payment of telephone bills may be made at that place of business thereafter.

Under the new system, all calls between Saco subscribers, now approximately 93 in number, will be handled entirely by the dial equipment. However, to call a Malta telephone, to make a long-distance call, or to secure the assistance of an operator in completing a call, telephone users should dial “0” (operator). This will connect them with an operator at the Malta switchboard.

100 Years Ago - 1922

- V.J. Ludwick was in Washington securing patent papers for a gasoline-saving device he had invented during the winter. Savings up to 40 percent on gasoline were claimed for the gadget, which was soon to go into production.

- It was announced that wooden coaches were soon to be a thing of the past on Trains 1 and 2. All steel from now on crowed the Enterprise.

- The basketball team ate pretty well during the week. First, they were entertained at dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Jacobson. Jake had been the coach for some years back. There was a second feast put on by Miss Edna Partridge, following a promise to her brother that if the team won a game, she would serve them a feed. The boys added insult to injury by bringing their girlfriends along.

- The country was having weather trouble. The Ynot community reported 46 below zero. Stockmen were complaining of short feed and stock losses and were hoping for an early spring. As spring’s best harbinger, the Enterprise pointed out to the presence of Billy Garland in town, saying he never showed up unless spring was just around the corner.

- If something doesn’t happen pretty quick, we’ll have to eliminate the feature for a while! Considerable space was devoted to bragging up the new Valley County jail at Glasgow, the editor delivered himself of a mighty blast in opposition to pardoning a local criminal and the Malta Band was readying itself for a St. Patrick’s Day concert, with bagpipe numbers by a Miss Krickshaw as an added attraction. Otherwise, the only news was that Harry Otterson and George Campbell were readying themselves for a ten-day trip to the Missouri River Breaks However, Malta’s real progress was reflected in an announcement that V.H. Grover was about to install a city telephone system. The exchange was to be at the Great Northern Hotel.
