City backs $6.4 million water system project

The Malta City Council met Monday night and endorses a draft report by a Great Falls engineering firm hired by the city to evaluate the state of its water system.

The council also voted to support the firm’s recommended alternative, a rehabilitation project with an estimated price tag of $6,441,000 that would require water rates to be raised $14.91 to an average of $36.41 a month.

The project would replace approximately 26,460 linear feet of pipe that has a history of breaks and leaks or is undersized and don’t meet Department of Environmental Quality standards.

The project would also fix a booster station to eliminate excessive energy costs, modify three well houses so a portable generator can be connected to operate them in emergency situations, and install new roofs on the well houses.

Mayor Shyla Jones said the council had the option of selecting one of two other alternatives which would address much smaller portions of the city’s water infrastructure at a lower cost and without the assistance of federal and state grants.

Or they could embrace the “big picture” and move forward knowing that if they don’t land any grant funds, they don’t have to implement the project.
