Divisional Golf Meet Held Here Both Malta Teams Qualify for State

The 2022 Northern B Divisional Golf Tournament was held here last Monday and Tuesday, May 9 & 10, at the Marion Hills Golf Course.

With the top four teams moving on, both the Malta boy's and girl's golf teams played well enough to qualify for the State Golf Tournament being held on May 16 through the 18 at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Golf Course in Anaconda.

On the girl's side of the divisional meet, Fairfield took home the team title with a score of +160. Shelby was second with a score of +165, Conrad third +179, and the M-ettes fourth with a score of +194.

"The wind played a big part in today's results," said Malta Head Coach Kate Webb. "Everyone had to really grind their way around the course."

The girls' medal winner by a large margin was Emma Woods from Fairfield with a +8 score that would have won the boy's side as well. In second was Delaney Clark of Shelby with a +27 (99), and Jori Clary of Shelby was third with a +28 (100).

The M-ettes' low score was turned in by Brittney Sorlie, who shot a +38 (110), good enough for sixth place. Sydney Gibbs shot a +48 (120) for tenth-place, Lavida Grotte-Dalby +50 (122), Kyann Bergos +58 (130), and Kennedy Koss +60 (132) rounded out the Malta scoring.

"It was a really challenging day today," said Sorlie. "But everyone had to deal with the same problems. I'm glad that we are able to keep going and play next week at the State Meet."

On the boy's side, it was a back and forth battle between Choteau and Glasgow for the title. With Choteau coming out on top with a score of +88. Glasgow finished second with a score of +93. Cut Bank was in third (+104), and Malta in fourth with a team score of +120.

The medal winner on the boy's side was Eli Feezell of Glasgow with a score of +10 (82). Second place went to Kellen Meyer of Choteau with a +12 (84), and third place went to Riley Smith of Glasgow +14 (86).

Low scorer for the Mustangs was Kaden Bishop who shot a +16 (88), good for fourth place overall. Ashton Weston shot a +32 (104), which tied him for 15th place overall. Kellen Murray +36 (108), Connor Clausen +36 (108), and Hunter Stolem +50 (122) rounded out the Mustang team.

"The wind was a big challenge today," said Bishop. "The greens were really fast as well. I had a few bad shots today, but I think everyone did. I'm happy that we were able to qualify for state."

Both Malta teams will play practice rounds on Monday, followed by two 18 hole days on Tuesday and Wednesday for the State Meet.
