Coach B's BB Academy in Whitewater

The Penguin Palace in Whitewater was the site of Coach B's Basketball Academy, a week-long event in which the youth of Phillips County and surrounding towns were able to work on their skills on the court.

The camp was led by Jenna Bolstad, an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Montana Tech. Bolstad coached Whitewater's Kia Wasson, and will be coaching Saco's Jaycee Erickson and Wasson this upcoming year.

"I feel like it has been good," Bolstad said of her training session in Whitewater. "The younger kids seemed to have fun. We have been pushing older kids really hard and they were really tired. It was hot in here yesterday, but they did well."

Bolstad, a Culbertson native, is familiar with Whitewater, having faced the Penguins in her high school years.

"They are coachable, all of these kids are very coachable," Bolstad said. "We have kids from Turner, Malta, Whitewater, Saco, and Hinsdale."

The camp had 30 participants from first to fifth grade and 45 from sixth to twelfth grade.

"The little kids camp is basically fundamentals," Bolstad said. "We are hitting on passing, getting form down, and making it fun for them."

With the older campers, Bolstad also touched on fundamentals, with a more competitive approach including 1-on-1 drills, practicing screens, and whatever the local coaches emphasize.

"It's good to bring somebody in that works at the collegiate level on individual skill work in a fun and competitive atmosphere," said Lady Mavericks Coach Amber Erickson, who helped coordinate the event.
