Malta's Dog Issue Getting Attention

That big loof of a pet, the family treasure, the ONE that for sure will welcome you when you get home…is drawing a lot of attention, especially from the public. Dog owners are being given warning that the laws for dogs running loose are going to be strictly enforced. Tickets will be written and if need be, should the violations continue, other steps and measures will be taken. Those steps include the removal of the dog from its home and possibly being euthanized.

That is a step Animal Control Officer Jim Truelove, hopes to avoid.

As the result of a dog not being properly confined, a family recently lost their family fur baby. The fur baby was attacked in its own yard when a dog running at large entered the yard and viciously attacked the defenseless pet. That family pet, one of the “family”, died as a result of the extensive wounds and injuries. Now the owner of the dog that did the attack, is facing veterinarian bills for the treatment and care of the dog that died.

For the ACO to take measures and enforce the laws, the party involved will need to file a complaint with law enforcement, if the ACO does not witness the incident. If you want action on the matter, take the steps needed to make things happen.

Homeowners are allowed to have up to three dogs and/or cats as long as they are licensed, vaccinated, and follow the City ordinances. Officer Truelove will be addressing complaints in an attempt to make the City safer for all, including your pets.

If you are uncertain of the ordinances governing animals, contact the City office; Chapters 6.01 through 6.23 will aid you in knowing the rights of pets and homeowners in regards to dogs and cats.

Help the City ACO with the rules and duties; help take a bite out of crime…before your dog takes a bite out of someone.
