Lady Mavs Start season With Wins

North Country Heading to Lewistown This Weekend

The North Country Lady Mavericks basketball team started their 2022-23 campaign with a pair of dominant wins at the 2022 Glasgow Class C Showcase last weekend.

They defeated Augusta 78-21 on Friday, December 2, and Terry 61-20 on Saturday, December 3.

"We came out strong in both of our games this weekend," Lady Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson said. "The girls have been really working hard in practice on a lot of different things both offensively and defensively and they were excited to get the season rolling!"

North Country will head to the 2022 Fergus Holiday Basketball Classic in Lewistown this weekend. They will face the Fort Benton Longhorns at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 9, and then the Denton-Geyser-Stanford Bearcats at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 10.

In their season opening win over Augusta, Paige Wasson led the charge with 32 points, six rebounds, and four steals. She also knocked down four treys.

"Paige is a very explosive player with the ability to score on all three levels of the game," Coach Erickson said. "She got into a great offensive flow early and really just never let up."

Shelbi LaBrie had ten points, three rebounds, and three assists. Mattea McColly had seven points, and Teagan Erickson had nine assists, six rebounds, and five steals.

As a team, North Country had 21 steals, 23 assists, and nine turnovers.

In the Lady Mavs' 61-20 win over Terry, Wasson led with 18 points and four steals. Erickson scored 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Mattea McColly scored 10 points and racked up six rebounds. Coach Erickson was asked about McColly, a senior post.

"Mattea did a great job of being strong and sealing inside against Terry's zone defense and her teammates were able to get her the ball and capitalize on that," Coach Erickson said. "She works hard and isn't afraid to be physical inside down low."

With the team rolling on all cylinders to start the year, Coach Erickson asked if anything surprised her in the team's first week.

"I was able to get all 12 of my players minutes in both games this weekend and I was very excited to see how well everyone played," Coach Erickson said. "I felt every player made the most of their minutes in the game and they looked very comfortable.

"I was also proud of my team for their effort on the defensive end and we were switching up defenses a lot and it takes great communication on their part to successfully execute this type of game plan," Coach Erickson continued. "They also did a great job of pushing the tempo, but playing smart, and we tried a lot of different zone offenses against the teams we played this weekend which was fun to see."
