Lady Coyotes Pick Up Win in Last Game of '22

The Dodson Lady Coyotes basketball team picked up their first win on the season on Monday, December 19, at the Coyote Den in Dodson.

The Lady Coyotes defeated the Turner Tornadoes 41-36 despite being down a few players.

Last season, Dodson faced Turner and lost both games. This year, Dodson would not let history repeat itself.

"I was very pleased to come away with a win considering we are down in numbers from last season," Dodson Head Coach Clayton KillEagle said. "But the girls have improved so much with their discipline and defense and it's clear to see it's paying off. On the offensive side they have improved their ability to execute and get the ball to the basket and shot selections are much better. But in all, I would say we have much improved our disciplined game and that will be our strongest asset going forward."

Kataya KillEagle led the Lady Coyotes with 25 points and three treys. Jazlyn KillEagle and Lindsey Fetter both had four points. Emma Cole, Lilyian TurnsPlenty, and Jay Stiffarm each had two points.

The Lady Coyotes kept pace with Turner in the first quarter, scoring eight points while Turner scored nine. K. KillEagle scored 12 of her points in the second quarter. Dodson outscored Turner 15-7 in the second period. The halftime score was 23-16 in favor of Dodson. The Tornadoes outscored Dodson 20-18 in the second half, but the Lady Coyotes held on to win.

With their first win under their belt, Coach KillEagle is trying to help the team get ready for the rest of the season during Christmas Break.

"Since we are low in numbers but strong at heart, we are whipping into elite shape and also going to work on sharpening up our offensive sets and positioning along with full court pressing defenses," Coach KillEagle said.

The team did have a game scheduled against Nashua on Tuesday, December 20, but the game was postponed due to weather.

The Lady Coyotes are scheduled to take on Roy-Winifred in Winifred on Friday, January 6, 2023, at 4:30 p.m. They will then go to Poplar on Saturday, January 7, at 1 p.m. to take on the Class B Poplar Indians.
