Lady Mavs Defeat Glasgow, Overcome Scobey

The North Country Lady Mavericks defeated a pair off teams to start of the new year.

The Lady Mavericks defeated the Class B Glasgow Lady Scotties 59-12 on Thursday, January 5, in Saco. The team then went to defeat the Scobey Spartans 61-43 in Scobey on Saturday, January 7.

"The girls came out and looked sharp, especially with it being the first two games after the Christmas Break," Mavericks Head Coach Amber Erickson said. "We were able to spend some time breaking stuff down especially on the offensive end and I thought the girls did a good job transitioning those skills into the games this weekend."

In the team's win over Glasgow, North Country made 60% of their shots from the floor and had 18 assists.

Teagan Erickson led the Lady Mavericks with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Paige Wasson had 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Shelbi LaBrie had 10 points, two assists, and three steals. Kora LaBrie had seven points, two assists, and two steals.

The Lady Mavericks built a 20-0 lead over Glasgow by the end of the first quarter. The score at halftime was 30-3. The score after the third quarter was 55-8, and the final score was 59-12.

"We tried a lot of different things in this game (defensively)," T. Erickson said. "We ran a lot of defenses, offenses and set plays."

The team spread the ball around and every North Country athlete was encouraged to shoot the ball.

"It's really big when those kids step up and shoot the ball and it goes in," Wasson said. "It helps everybody. Sometimes when your best scorers have defenders on them and they can't get to the basket, and those people step up, it really helps."

Though they dominated every quarter of their game against Glasgow, the Lady Mavericks struggled early against Scobey, who outscored North Country 17-7 in the first quarter of their matchup.

The Lady Mavericks did bounce back in the second quarter, outscoring their rival 23-5 in the second quarter. The Lady Mavericks led 30-22 at halftime. They continued to build their lead, outpacing Scobey 18-13 in the third quarter and 13-8 in the fourth quarter.

Wasson led North Country in the win with 19 points, 10 steals, and three rebounds. Erickson had 18 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. K. LaBrie had eight points and four assists. S. LaBrie had seven points and five assists.

Prior to the Scobey game, Wasson was asked what would be important in trying to defeat the Lady Spartans.

"Staying calm, because they are really going to come out and try to pressure us," Wasson said.

T. Erickson was asked about the team's Winter Break, that had concluded two days prior to their game against Glasgow.

"As basketball goes, we got a lot done," T. Erickson said. "Practices were intense and it went really well."

North Country will head to Saco to face the Lustre Christian Lady Lions on Friday, January 13. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. The team will then travel to Frazer to face the Lady Bearcubs on Saturday, January 14, at 6 p.m.
