FOOT WARMERS WORK!

Gold bricks, used by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitcomb as foot warmers, were worth $8,300. (Mrs. Whitcomb, recalling the incident, says that she and Mr. Whitcomb left Zortman in bitterly cold weather. To protect themselves from the cold they heated the gold bricks, wrapped them in sacks, and used them as foot warmers, which purpose they served nicely. When they arrived at the Phillips ranch, B. M. Phillips, who was interested in the mines and the gold, insisted they substitute less valuable bricks as foot warmers and placed the gold bricks in a padlocked mail sack. The long trip to Malta was made by team.)
