Lady Mavericks win Third 3C Title in a Row

The Lady Mavericks earned their third straight 3C District Tournament Championship Trophy on Saturday, February 18, at the team defeated the Scobey Spartans 58-34 in Glasgow.

The Mavericks defeated the Nashua Porcupines 66-23 in the 3C District Tournament's semifinal round on Thursday, February 16. The team was awarded a first round bye thanks to their 18-0 season, which gave them the first seed in the tournament, and a 2023 3C Conference Title.

The Lady Mavericks will face the Mon-Dak (Westby-Grenora) Thunder on Wednesday, February 22, in Wolf Point to open up the 2023 Girls Eastern C Divisional Tournament.

"They had a great district tournament, continuing to take it one game at a time coming out District Champions and 20-0," Coach Erickson said. "We plan to continue to work hard this extra week between divisionals on breaking our offenses down and fine tuning all our defenses."

The Mon-Dak Thunder are 10-11 so far this year, and went 2-1 at the 2C tournament last weekend in Sidney, and took fourth place after a 43-41 win over Fairview last Saturday.

In the Lady Maverick's 58-34 3C Championship win over Scobey, Paige Wasson led the team with 29 points, four rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Teagan Erickson had 19 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Kendel Scheffelmear had six points and four rebounds.

North Country scored 17 points, while holding Scobey to eight points in the first quarter. North Country also outscored Scobey 20-6 in the second quarter. The Mavs outscored Scobey 21-20 in the second half.

North Country forced a total of 33 turnovers, 16 from steals, and had 11 assists as a team.

In the Mavericks win over Nashua, Wasson led with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Erickson had 14 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. Scheffelmear had eight points, Mattea McColly had seven points. Shelby LaBrie had six points, four rebounds, and five steals. Kora LaBrie had six points, five assists, and three steals.

North Country forced 23 turnovers and scored 31 points off of those turnovers. The Lady Mavs also outrebounded Nashua 33-17 and had 39 defensive stops, while Nashua only had 21.

Though the team is still undefeated, Coach Erickson believes that there is still more that this team can do.

"The girls are playing amazing but have yet to reach their full potential so we are looking forward to the last few weeks of this special season," Coach Erickson said.
