Avoid March Madness Binge Drinking

March Madness is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year, and it positively affects every school involved.

Yet, the tournament does expose students and fans to the negative influence of excessive alcohol use. It can be challenging to avoid the pitfalls of binge drinking during any significant sporting event.

Fortunately, there are practical approaches that anyone can use.

Binge drinking is most common among young adults aged 18 to 34, primarily men.

"Even young adults needs adequate preventative information and awareness campaigns to help them make informed decisions about alcohol use," said Marcel Gemme, Founder & CEO of Addicted.org.

Binge drinking is a pattern of consuming alcohol that increases blood alcohol concentration to 0.08% or higher within a matter of hours.

Suppose someone is in recovery from addiction or wants to avoid alcohol use. In that cases, begin by knowing and identifying relapse triggers. For example, people, places, sounds, smells, different environments, and anything that could trigger someone to want to drink alcohol.

One could avoid these triggers or set clear boundaries and limitations for themselves. In addition, manage any negative emotions with a healthy outlet, such as exercise or hobbies.

Attend games, viewing parties, or post-game celebrations with other sober like-minded people. Have an exit plan if things become too much to manage. Do not be afraid to turn down invitations; always ask for help when needed.

In contrast, many people choose to drink responsibly. In that case, stick to one or two alcoholic beverages during the game. Drink water and have a full meal. Avoid drinking games or any environment that promotes excessive alcohol use. Never drink and drive.

The consequences of binge drinking affect college students, their families, and college campuses. While March Madness is some of the most exciting basketball seen all year, participating in the festivities should not cost anyone their health or future.
