The Dirt Daubers decorated birdhouses to add a spring look across town. Assisting were Kathy McMahon, Sarah Osmudson, Rosemary Veseth, Jane Ereaux, Wilma Mavencamp, Mary Shores, and Kathy and Clara Waters.

Malta School District was provided with a list of recommended head girls’ basketball coaches, which the board voted to accept. Absent from the list was current head coach Terry Lindgren, leaving him to wonder why he wasn’t recommended for a new contract. Lindgren had been at the helm for ten years.

Selected as the Patriot’s Pen Award winner was Garrett Giblette; Johanna Nagy won second. The Patriot’s Pen essay winners were Bella Mackey, first, Sophia Stiles, second, Travis Epperson, third, and Chantel Lett, fourth. Awards, certificates, and cash prizes were presented by Kari Hould (VFW Aux. President), Mickey Mecklenberg (VFW Commander), and Don Klinko (VFW patriotism chairman).

Local artist, Dayla Hepting, was featured with her drawing of beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg. The definition of a “beatnik” is “young people in the 1950s who rejected the traditional values, customs, and dress of western society and experimented with eastern philosophies, communal living, and illegal drugs. Dayla started in the art field a year ago and is now 70 years old.

Young fishermen receiving awards for being nominated for Angler of the Year included Bobby Mayer, Mason Adams, Aidan Kaasa, Reese Brown, Maria Brown, Kimber Kovach, Ryan NcNeely, Peyton Jones, Tye Jones, Channa Stolem, Cede Mayer, Jenna Waters, Lauren Doney, Blake Holman, RC Skiff, Sylvie Hanson, Finley Hanson, Oslo Stenberg, and McKinley Skiff. Nearly 400 turned out for the annual banquet sponsored by Walleyes Unlimited.

The Jazz Combo comprised of Jeremy Costin, Carter Epperson, Mary Grace Kalal, Tyler Ost, Justin Paul, Collin Holman, Tyson Carney, and Spencer VanWichen. “Concert #30” was under the direction of Erik Engebretson.

Terrence Snell was one of 31 young men receiving their Eagle Scout award in Helena, MT by Lt. Gov. John Walsh. 2012 was one of the biggest years in Montana scouting history as 176 had earned the rank.

Junior Troy Manoukian tied for first place at the Regional Science fair; he won an expense-paid trip to the International Science Fair in Phoenix.

Dodson School was facing a cut of $76,000 of its budget. As part of Supt. Landis’ proposed cuts were the elimination of the elementary school principal position currently held by Dollyann Willcutt.

Saco Technology Education Instructor Dwight Freeman was honored with the 1998 Technology Teacher of the Year. He was presented the award at the ITEA 60th Annual Conference in Fort Worth, TX.

Ned Mangis, after disassembling a 40-year-old log building in Malta and reassembling it in a new location said it was “just something to do.” He then said “I’ll never do it again. After we got it all done we realized it was quite the undertaking for two people in their mid-seventies.” The log structure was purchased on a bid when the City sold the building originally at Trafton Park.

Former (& retired) referee Swede Fahlgren wrote a letter to the editor questioning why it was necessary to have an MVP in high school sports. He stated it is a team effort and only causes bad feelings.

Winners in the bumper sticker contest at the recent Ag Day were Quinton Hoff, Caleb Young, Kate Murdock, Emilee Phillips, Roman Morris, Katrena Palmer, and Alecia Wiederrich.

Saco Supt. Larry Crowder has accepted the position of superintendent at Culbertson School effective July 1st. He has been head of Saco Schools for three years and making the decision was difficult.

The Jack O’Reilly’s of Miles City and the Barry McNamara’s announce the forthcoming marriage of their children, Jackie and Sean. They plan to wed on May 30th in Miles City.

Air Force Airman Michael A. Murieen graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. A 1997 graduate of Whitewater, MT, he is the son of Patty Anderson.

Dodson Girls State delegate is Melody Larsen. Michelle Cole was chosen as an alternate. They will represent the Thomas P. Appelhans American Legion Post.

Lorraine Hellie of Whitewater is the top Phillips County speller, having won the spelling bee last Friday. Judy Menge placed second, Danny Wilke, third, Roxane Kolczak, fourth, and Bernie Malin, fifth. Alternates were the next three spellers, Susan Newby, Tammy Newby, and Jeff Murdock.

Jeff Darrah was the only champion from Malta in the Eastern Montana Junior AAU held in Malta last Friday and Saturday. He boxed in the 65-pound class. Dexter Henry, 118-pound class in the 14-15 age group, and his brother Dirk, 100-pound class in the same age group, each took second place.

Alice Anderson won the ladies’ pool tournament held at Stine’s Nite Club Sunday afternoon. Elsie Sorenson was second, Kay Taylor, third, and Sue Parker, fourth. Other contestants were Carol Miller, Sandy Hasler, Janice Stine, Ginny Eskildsen, Lois Waters, Judy Matovich, Stella Schwartz, Joyce Wright, Sweetie Kolczak, Midge Haynes, Vi Snell, and Jackie Halvorson.

Ralph Young, Malta’s chief of police, announced in a letter to Mayor Duke Seel that he will resign on April 14. Letters from applicants Alert Fladland and Kenneth Watson, police officers, were read. Applications are accepted until March 26.

A wedding dance for Patty Hazen and Ron Kienenberger will be held at the Hi-Way Bar in Dodson on Saturday. Relatives and friends are invited.

The American Legion Auxiliary entertained the Legion at the annual birthday party in the auxiliary room at the City Hall. They voted to give the price of a pair of sheets to the Survant Hospital, to give the Girls Scouts and Brownies $15 each, and the Red Cross $25. President Emily Hould announced a committee had selected Donna Korb as the Girls State delegate and Della Olson will be the alternate.

The major repair job schedule in the Chinook district of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company will be the rebuilding of the Malta dump, according to Ford Scalley, Montana manager, who was in Malta Tuesday. Mr. Scalley said a full crew will be put on the Malta job as soon as the weather permits.

The body of Hjalmer J. Paulson, a farmer in the north Wagner community for 24 years, was shipped to Rushmore, Minn., for burial. Paulson was found dead in his bachelor home last Wednesday by Chris Vickhammer, it is believed that he died of natural causes about 36 hours before Vickhammer went to the house.

Joe Rose became the commander-elect of the Malta American Legion, Eugene Bayless was chosen as vice commander, and Charles Coffman was named adjutant. Louie LaRoche succeeded himself as finance officer and Carl Eton was named chaplain, Al Meyer was elected sergeant-at-arms, and Howard Cauffman as historian. The post now has 125 members, with 12 more to go to reach the quota.

The Dodson Coyotes, who are playing this weekend at Laurel in the state B basketball tournament are Vance Ramberg, Leonard Boos, James Nordlund, Clarence Adams, Richard McNamara, Lazure Ereaux, Douglas Kirkaldie, Gary Kodalen, Olan Munson and Lon Rusk. They are coached by Garfield Munson.

It has not only been well-wishing for the Dodson High School basketball team playing in the state finals this week. Along with goodwill has come over $300 from the Dodson and other communities to help pay the expenses of the team to Laurel. The team and coach say, “We’ll do our best at Laurel.”

Determination to press the matter of law enforcement in Malta regarding violations of laws governing gambling, slot machines, punch boards, sales of liquor to minors, and other statutes relating to juveniles was expressed by 30 some women at a meeting of the Woman’s Civic Organization at the Coffee Cup Café dining room Monday afternoon.

The current district court term was progressing slowly. A damage suit brought by Anna Olson against the Great Northern Railway for the death of her husband had been settled for $5,000.

Clarence Rawdon had purchased the “Shorty Rule” barbershop.

Twin babies born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Holman had succumbed.

Three Phillips county teachers had received professional certificates including Ellen Swanson (Geeting). Ada Brady (Anderson) Gertrude Verbeck and Daisy McEwen had received second-grade certificates and Clyde Quigley and Alma Coe, temporary certificates.

A 40 et 8 was to be organized by Malta Legionnaires.

John Hardin had the misfortune to lose a valuable workhorse in a runaway at his ranch north of Malta.

The Mission Creek Mining company planned to build a cyanide mill near Zortman.

H. Caselberg was awarded the contract for the care of the poor. The editor commented, “It may surprise many to know that Valley County spent $2,000 for this purpose last year.”
