MALTA Mustang Track 2023

Mustangs Welcome Six Freshmen, New Coach

The Malta Mustangs Track Team welcomes a total of 13 athletes this season. And though the year is off to a slow start given the snow still present outside the team has been working hard inside according to first-year Head Coach Desiree Egger.

"There's always a challenge when the weather doesn't cooperate," Coach Egger said. "Everyone is tired of being cooped up in the gym. However, we have tried keeping it fun by incorporating relays into the workouts and keeping practice to about an hour. We have used this time to really work on the fundamentals of each event, but we are ready to get outside."

The Malta teams will be led by several familiar faces this season. Shyla Clausen will coach Long and Triple Jumps, Jennifer Rickett wil coach Hurdles and High Jump, Ryan Wilson will coach Sprints, Andy Schell will coach Throws, and Pat Sargent will coach Pole Vault.

"These coaches we have are really the back bone of the whole program," Coach Egger said. "They have been great to work with thus far and I look forward to the rest of the season."

The team welcomes back seniors Draven Lageson and Gavin Slade. This years' juniors are Kyle Darrington, Bow SaintLouis, and Mason Sjostrom. The sophomores are Handsome Gardipee, Ivan Lefdahl, and Kash Stiles. The freshman class includes Rylee Brusse, Sonny Gray, Dawson Hammond, Michael Mayer, TJ Siewing, and Kael Young.

Darrington, Slade and Lefdahl each competed at the 2022 State B Track Meet last spring. The trio along with Cash Salsbery, a 2022 MHS Graduate, were seventh in the short relay at state with a time of 45.32 seconds. Slade and Darrington also ran at state in the long relay.

Individually, Slade and Darrington both competed in the 100. Darrington also ran in the 200 and 400 events. Slade competed in javelin.

When asked how the team has performed during indoor practices, she gave credit to the senior class.

"The senior leaders have really stepped up and helped lead," Coach Egger said. "I was pleased to see that the upper class men were eager to get to work, they are good about making sure they maintain balance during the week getting to every event. This leadership allows the younger classmen to follow and see such good examples."
