Shirley was born on April 11, 1943, to James and Ethel (Nelson) O’Brien in Virginia. Shirley moved to Malta, Mont., at a very young age.

Shirley married Marvin Jones on August 26, 1959. To this union four children were born: Shawna, Marvin Troy, Mark and Darcy.
