  • Equity Co-op to celebrate 100th next Wednesday

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 2, 2016

While deconstruction takes place across the street on the old grain elevator, the new construction at Equity Co-op in Malta is complete as the local business prepares for their 100th Anniversary Celebration next Wednesday, November 9. "It's sad to see that go, but it is out with the old and in with the new," Equity Co-op manager Mark French said. "Those old elevators are becoming obsolete, but there is also an upgrade and improvement at the main store, so it's not a completely sad story."...

  • Hauntingly delightful

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 2, 2016

Nervous laughter, clinched fists and screams from deep down in the belly were the order of the evening as the Phillips County Ambulance Annual Haunted House took over the basement of Stretch's on Friday and Saturday nights in Malta. "I'm thinking that there are clowns in there," Mia Moore, 8, said as she stood online for her trip through the house. "If there are, I will probably cry." Moore said she had just eaten dinner before coming down to visit the haunted house and hoped she wouldn't be...

  • City Council looks to purchase land for new pool

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 2, 2016

During the Malta City Council Meeting last Wednesday, the council decided in a unanimous, 4-0 vote to proceed with a tentative plan to purchase the land south of St. Mary’s Parish in Malta from the church in hopes of building a new pool there. St. Mary’s Church would only be asking for fair market value for the lots, according to Malta Mayor Shyla Jones. She said no plans for the purchase by the City of Malta definite, but added in order to get designs for a new pool drawn there needs to be an idea of how big of a space the City would have to w...

  • HLRC holds annual meeting

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 2, 2016

The last meeting held by the Hi-Line Retirement Center (HLRC) at First State Bank in Malta was full of doom and gloom. What a difference a month and a half makes. Last Thursday, the HLRC Board of Directors, Administrator Dwayne Murray and heads of staffs, some new and others not, attended the group’s annual meeting at First State Bank and though the center is not out of the woods as far as financial crisis, the message of the night was positivity, change and an eye towards the center’s future. “We are feeling really positive right now,...

  • Vote no on I-177

    Parker Heinlein, Outdoor Columnist|Nov 2, 2016

I’m a hunter, not a trapper, but ballot initiative I-177 affects me nonetheless. If passed by voters Nov. 8, trapping will no longer be allowed on public land in Montana. That would give me one less worry when I’m afield with my dogs. However, it would create a far greater concern for the future. Because I-177 is fueled by emotion, not biology, I wonder how long it would be before an initiative banning hunting on public land would appear on the ballot. I-177 lays the groundwork. Almost every tim...

  • A note from the McKoys about Art's Furniture

    Nov 2, 2016

Dear Editor, I read with interest your cover article about the changes at Art’s Furniture (Art Lundstrom to retire after 39 years, October 12, 2016). It doesn’t seem possible that nearly 40 years have passed since my dad sold the business to Art and Mary Lundstrom. For the McKoy family the “Store” including the apartments above supported our big family for over 30 years as well. I am sure my parents would agree that what sustains a family-owned business in a rural community are the wonderful people who buy things over and over through...

  • Dismayed by Judge McKeon's decision

    Nov 2, 2016

To the Editor, I am writing to express my complete dismay over Judge McKeon's decision regarding the sentencing of the man who committed incest with his daughter. I know too many women personally who have been abused by their fathers in this way. The father let off so lightly will do something again - will try evil acts again. This judge's decision is a complete miscarriage of justice and he should be removed from any case of rape, incest, or abuse. The girl is not going to be protected by her mother or ever again by her father. Carolyn Hopper...

  • I will 're-follow' you on Nov. 9, I promise

    Mark Hebert, Editor|Nov 2, 2016

If I haven’t “liked” your photo of breakfast pancakes or given you the “smiley emoji” for a silly cat video on Facebook in awhile, chances are I have unfollowed you on social media. Now, don’t worry. We are still Facebook “friends.” But if I haven’t commented on your post in the past few months, more than likely I got tired of your political rants, un-fact checked stats and out and out lies. And guess what? I am allowed to do so. There is a popular meme floating around social media of late that reads: “I will respect you regardless of who y...

  • A long trip home

    Pierre Bibbs, Sports Editor|Nov 2, 2016

So, I’m going home or have already been home. As I sit at my office typing this I am dreading this 24 hour trip I am about to take my family on. Though I love the destination, the long drive is more than undesirable. The fact that we are making the drive with a two-year-old that needs his fair share of exercise on any given day, concerns me. Our boy isn’t quite potty trained yet, so he doesn’t voice his opinion of when he needs to go to the bathroom and when he does go to the bathroom findi...

  • Loring NEws for the week of November 2, 2016

    Dixie Stordahl, PCN Correspondent|Nov 2, 2016

1-26. Hey, all! This is mostly about Dixie Stordahl's trip to Arizona! I had a flight with Allegient which I love because it is a straight flight with no layovers. But this time it was late by about two hours. My brother Scott met me at the Mesa airport and drove me to his home, where a delicious dinner was waiting, thanks to Roxanne, my sister in law! Scott and I took in the meteorite museum at the ASU campus which is awesome! Not a large museum, but very well done and informative! Then on to...

  • Phillips County Museum News for November 2, 2016

    Lori Taylor, PC Museum Curator|Nov 2, 2016

History is an amazing thing. Each generation creates their individual history yet if we look back we sometimes find a time in history that is similar to events that this generation feels is uniquely ours. The book “Popular to Papua” is an example of this. The story is set during World War II. It is a story of Montana National Guard’s 163rd Infantry Regiment and how they took part in World War II. (Did you think that Desert Storm was the first time a National Guard Unit was called up?) It’s a story of young men that joined the guard to earn th...
