VanWichen takes the 16th Annual Jack Brogan Tourney

Malta golfer, Keenan VanWichen took the top honors of the 16th Annual Jack Brogan Memorial Golf Tournament held Saturday, May 17th at Marion Hills. Keenan shot an 80 to win the scholarship. He follows in the footsteps of his brother, Spencer, who has won the tournament twice in previous years. Teammate Jase Galt shot an 86 to take second place. Van Wichen's name will be added to the large tournament plaques displayed at the Tin Cup and at Malta High School.

Coach Lynne Nevrivy, together with Tournament Committee members, Roger Amundson and Dave Broadbrooks, helped get the tournament underway. The tournament opened with "Amazing Grace" played on the bagpipes by Dr. Mike Gibson of Havre.

Each spring, members of the Malta High School Boy's Golf Team compete for a chance at a scholarship and plaque. The scholarship is held in an interest bearing account until the winner has graduated.

Jack was a member of the first Malta High School Boy's Golf Team in its inaugural year, 1998. He was a sophomore. Jack qualified for the State Golf Meet in Anaconda, along with teammates Kirk Stiles, Kenny Murray, Jim Slade and Jesse Brown. Mr. Bernie Wasser was the coach. Jack had a real passion for golf and enjoyed playing with anyone who was willing to swing a club and loved the challenge of the different courses.

Jack was killed in an auto accident on July 4, 1998. This scholarship was set up as a memorial in remembrance of Jack and his love of the game of golf.

Jack's favorite golf quote: "If you played well today, next week I won't remember. If you played poorly today, next week I won't remember. If you cheated today, I will remember forever."
