Dr. George Clay, beloved physician on northern Montana for many years, died at his home of pneumonia on September 4. George was a member of the 13th legislative assembly from Valley County and when Phillips County was formed was the first senator to represent the new county. Members of the Knights Templar, Masons, Eastern Stars, Odd fellows, and Royal Neighbors attended the funeral.

Axel Cahling, a farmer in the Whitewater community, was shot and killed by his 17-year-old son as he lay sleeping in his home. The father and Son had been quarreling about the division of work on the farm.

The Malta Schools opened for the year with William McDowell superintendent, five high school teachers, and 12-grade school teachers.

The creation of the proposed Mil River County out of eastern Phillips and western Valley County was disallowed on the grounds that the valuation was not sufficient.

Highway speed limit set at 50 miles
Montana motorists may speed up today, but only to 50 miles an hour.
The State Highway Patrol board removed the wartime 35 miles an hour limit imposed to save tires and gasoline and prevent accidents but set the new limit at 50 miles an hour, day or night.
The piece I'm limit was 55 miles an hour at night, but there was no daytime limit. It was provided only that speed was reasonable and proper. The board order specified that the limitation on trucks and tractors weighing more than two tons will remain at 45 miles an hour.
Japanese Bob Scare
Rumors were rife in the Little Rocky Mountains on Sunday concerning the explosion of a Japanese incendiary bomb supposed to have landed near the Kolczak ranch. No one saw the balloon carrying the bomb, but several persons had heard an explosion which "shook houses." It all turned out to be the explosion of a dynamite charge set off by a local rancher.

School enrollment down slightly from last year
A total of 925 students are enrolled in Malta Schools, it was announced last week. This is again a decrease over past years. Total enrollment in the 1969-70 school year was 939 and it as 934 in 1968-69.
Wagon Train starts Friday in Malta
A signal from the wagon boss and his shouted command to "Roll 'Em" along about 8 o'clock tomorrow (Friday) morning will start the first annual Milk River Wagon Train on its three and a half-day trip to Malta.
Editor's Note: Last year the Milk River Wagon Train celebrated 50 years, but there is still some dispute about which year was the first for the event.

Malta JV squad shuts out Fergus
The Malta Junior Varsity football squad shut down the Fergus Eagles 41-0 Saturday afternoon to kick-off the season.
The JV squad is coached by Tad Schye, Andy Otteson, Rick Walker, and Darin Cummings, and scored their first touchdown of the year when Kale Wilke scored on a 3-yard run, and then Jeremy Otteson had a 3-yard score before an 8-yard touchdown from Thad Bedwell and an 11-yard score from Nate Salsbery.
