  • PCN Brings Back Memories for Glasgow Reader

    Jan 17, 2024

Dear Editor and PCN Readers: I've been putting this off for some time and the time has come. My sister, Shelley Dunbar, after reading the PC News, has instructions to save those papers for me and sends them down via her or my brother, Jim. I can then read at my pleasure after a hard day of playing pinochle. After l read them I pass them on to my friends, Betty and Gene Sipe (former residents of Malta (he was Bowdoin Lake Manager, Betty worked at JCPenney who also enjoy each and every issue, but... The articles that are written by Kari Hould are...

  • MT State Bar Exam's Jurisdiction Questioned

    Jan 17, 2024

Dear Editor, Our Montana code has about 70-75 occupations where if one wants, they can go to the state and take an exam. When they pass the exam they can then be qualified by the state to do business under their certification. These certifications are essentially under the jurisdiction of the state legislature. Not so with becoming an attorney. To get that certification, one has to first graduate from an "approved by an American Bar Association" college or school. Then and only then can one take their Montana State Bar exam - from the MT State...

  • Clause for a Cause

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor: I just wanted to share this amazing man with you. Santa. This Santa does a great thing every Christmas season. He is truly Clause for a Cause. Each year he donates the proceeds from his visits with a specific charity to make our community/world a better place. This year the cause is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, all of the proceeds go to helping to find a cure. This one is close to our heart as my 9 year old nephew from Ballantine is afflicted with this disease. Just thought a shout...

  • VFW Responds to Anonymous Letter

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor and PCN Readers: To the group of people who anonymously gave the VFW Auxiliary a letter on their feelings on the Veterans Day dinner, we would like to address some of your issues. 1) As far as the menu goes, we do not know who is a diabetic or not. We can not plan meals around everyone's health issues. We all have different ones. But on the other hand, you know if you are a diabetic or not; and if you can’t have two starches, then don’t eat one. 2) As far as it being crowded in the serving area, tables were already set up for...

  • Fighting to Decrease Suicide Rate in Montana

    Jan 10, 2024

Dear Editor: I am writing to encourage everyone to join the fight to help decrease the suicide rate in Montana. We have ranked in the top three for suicides per capita for years. Now we know more knowledge and we need to utilize it in order to improve not only that terrible statistic, but to decrease the loss of life due to suicides and address the desperation that is causing our people to act. I know that is a big goal, but united we can do it! Some of you have already been introduced to the national hot line number 988, but we need EVERYONE,...

  • Council On Aging

    Dec 27, 2023

Dear Sir: The Phillips County Council on Aging has a goal of assisting and promoting programs to help senior citizens in Phillips County. Through our programs we have become aware of many local seniors who could benefit by staying in our local community but have a difficult time living on their own. Recently the former nursing home was purchased and remodeled to provide 24 hour care in an assisted living facility. It has just received its Medicaid license. This allows the Rivers Bend Assisted Living facility to accept Medicaid payments for...

  • Malta, A Caring Community

    Nov 8, 2023

To the Great Folks of Malta, On November 1, 2023, one of our travel companions on the westbound Empire Builder Train experienced a medical emergency. That emergency necessitated a trip to the Phillips County Hospital by the Malta EMTs. Many thanks to the first responders who transported our friend to the hospital and the Sheriff Deputies, Faith Robinson and Taylor Matthews who transported my wife and me, and our large quantities of luggage to the Edgewater Inn & RV Park. There, we were welcomed on short notice and with the offer of some...

  • Horses and Heroes

    Nov 8, 2023

Dear Editor, I was reading in a recent Montana Senior News issue that veterans can go to the Double-H Ranch in Bozeman, Mont., and start getting their lives back on track after leaving the service. Now young people should take note of this when they are fooling around with their idle time getting into trouble. These veterans have all kinds of problems and want to heal themselves and have something to look forward to. A lot of you young people are healthy or were healthy, and opportunities are right at your fingertips, while these veterans have...

  • PCN Article is Fridge Worthy, Thank You

    Jul 12, 2023

Dear Editor, In reference to the message, “Reflecting on a Grateful Nation” by Kari Hould in last week’s PCN, thank you, Kari. I am going to clip your column and put it on our fridge door. You are right on this date, July 4, 2023. My parents came from Norway at a young age to find that future and hope in this “Grateful Nation.” We can do that by what we do and say. You mentioned, Kari, that kindness does not hurt; you are right on. As we think about our business's downtown, churches, schools, doctors and nurses care, banks and so...

  • Montana Is Being Limited By Federal Overreach In DC

    Jun 28, 2023

Government inefficiency knows no bounds. A classic example is the fact that it takes a literal act of Congress to add flights from the Western United States into Reagan National Airport in DC. This arbitrary restriction on the free market has resulted in underutilization of that airport, and fewer options and higher fares for those of us in the West. It all goes back to good ole boy deals made back when Reagan National Airport was first constructed decades ago. By loosening the federal binds on Reagan National, Montanans would benefit from...

  • Climate Change Effects on Montanans

    Jun 28, 2023

Montana’s 1972 constitution guarantees its citizens a right to “a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.” The 2023 trial of Held V. State of Montana, a lawsuit brought by 16 Montana youth, attempts to show how the state government’s longstanding energy policies violate this constitutional right by favoring fossil fuel industries with high carbon emissions. The lawsuit is named for plaintiff Rikki Held, age 22, a fifth-generation Montanan raised on a cattle ranch in the Powder River basin. In...

  • Fighting for MT Schools

    Jun 14, 2023

Dear Editor, Every parent remembers the day we took our child to their first day of school. It pulls at your heartstrings. Fortunately, in Montana, we knew our children were in good hands. They were entering schools with teachers who were well qualified and supported, learning lessons from curriculum we had approved, and following the rules set by school boards we had elected. As a mom, a teacher and a legislator, I believe that the work Montanans have done for public education provides a pathway for every child to be their best, for every...

  • All 60's Class Reunion Was Great!

    Jun 14, 2023

Dear Editor, The Classes of 1960-1969 held their Class Reunions at the Tin Cup on Friday and Saturday June 2nd and 3rd; Sunday the gathering was at the Sleeping Buffalo. Friday evening the food was outstanding at the Tin Cup and the service was good. But there was no water, no coffee, or other drinks. The only way you could get something to drink was from the bar. There were 240 people attending this event. The acoustics were terrible, the only way you could visit was to scream! It was obvious the bar was out to make money and they did! They...

  • New Assault on Federal Grazing

    Jun 7, 2023

Dear Editor, With all the checks and balances ingrained in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, it is incomprehensible how one election is totally destroying the foundation of our very successful republic. Wayne Hage, in his book 'Storm over Rangelands', extensively documented how the eastern industrialists coveted the natural resources of the western states and since the 1880's had been using the federal government to keep these resources out of the hands of the western settlers (i.e. forest reserves, retained mineral rights, etc.)....

  • Every Brilliant Thing Showing This Friday at MHS

    May 3, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter because I am very over the top about this play, EVERY BRILLIANT THING. The play will be presented in Malta on Friday, May 5 at 6:30 in the high school auditorium. When it came to town a few years ago, I “just happened” to become involved because I housed the actors in my home. Wow, what a great thing to have happened to me. EVERY BRILLIANT THING, is a powerful and timely play that shines a light on all the things that make life worth living. I promise you will not be bored while you will be learning...

  • Iowa Man Recalls Camping In Malta, Act of Vandalism

    Feb 22, 2023

Dear Editor, Here at Marble Rock, we have a volunteer monthly newspaper. Our circulation is approximately 400 and is sent free to everyone with a 50653-zip code. I am writing you since I write an article each month, mostly about our history. Sometimes I cover personal stories. The one this month mentions Malta, Montana. My wife and I were in our early 20’s and we decide to take a vacation to Glacier and Yellowstone. We didn’t have much money, so we were camping. It was nearly dusk when we pulled off to stay overnight in Malta. By the time...

  • PCHC Update from CEO Tharp

    Feb 15, 2023

Dear Editor, Healthcare is an ever-changing system and PCH has had to make changes to ensure that we are meeting the needs and demands of our community. Over the past couple of years, in the midst of a global pandemic, PCH has remained dedicated to our mission of making a difference in healthcare. Many hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes continue to fall victim to financial shortfalls and are faced with challenging financial decisions and PCH has been no exception to this. Working together with the PCH Board of Directors, we have developed an...

  • Two Bills Pertaining to Minors are Going Through Legislature

    Feb 8, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing to you to inform the public on two bills protecting kids that are going through the MT legislature right now and need urgent attention. For those constituents of Representative Casey Knudsen, I ask that you contact him, let him know you are his constituent, and ask him to vote yes to HB234. This bill will remove public schools from an obscenity exemption clause. Currently if you provide obscene material to kids on the street, you will be in legal trouble. If you are a teacher or librarian inside a public school, that...

  • Operation Christmas Child Update for Malta

    Feb 1, 2023

Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Malta-area residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Generosity throughout contributed to a successful shoebox gift collection season at drop-off locations for the Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child. Across the U.S., the project collected over 9.3 million shoebox gifts in 2022. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2022, the ministry is now sending nearly 10.6 million shoebox gifts to children worldwide....

  • Senater Bill 72 Could Change Local Water Management

    Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, Legislation under consideration in Helena on water use and water rights could negatively impact the economic future of Montana family farms and ranches. Senate Bill 72 makes sweeping changes to Montana water law, directly targeting our local district courts’ supervisory authority over local water commissioners. It replaces our current functioning system and centralizes control in a new, permanent Water Court with expanded powers over water rights enforcement. Controversial provisions in this bill create a new opportunity for...

  • American Prairie: Giving Back to the Community

    Jan 25, 2023

Dear Editor, “What does American Prairie do for the community?” As the organization’s Senior Outreach Manager, and a Lewistown resident, I’m grateful to reflect on that question at the start of a new year. First, American Prairie is part of this community. The same number of employees live in Fergus and Phillips Counties as in Bozeman – and this number will grow. Seven of us reside in Fergus County along with our partners and spouses, kids, parents, and even grandparents. We own and rent homes, send our kids to school, shop local,...

  • Response: Predators

    Dec 21, 2022

Dear Editor and Readers, Apparently, Mr. Heinlein isn't too impressed by the role Predators play on the elk and deer population. The only knowledge I have over him, with what they can do to the deer population, is what I can remember as a boy in the 1940s. There were no deer. My granddad shot the last deer he saw in South Valley in 1907, and the next deer that was seen on the old home place was 1948, the next year, either 1949 0r 1950 the FW&P opened a 3 day season, bucks only. By 1951-52 I got a chance to hunt myself. By 1955, a hunting...

  • They Would Rather See Wolves than Wild Game

    Dec 7, 2022

Dear Editor and Readers, I've noticed on all of the news outlets and in the papers, that the man in charge of the wolf population in Montana is retiring and said it has been a roaring success. I wholeheartedly agree. They have brought back enough wolves to exterminate the deer and elk in western Montana for whatever reasons that they have hidden. The one thing it did do, is push all the hunters over to Eastern Montana where we still have game, at least until the wolves show up. Of course we blame all the hunters, and yet they are victims of an...

  • Research Candidates and Issues

    Oct 5, 2022

Dear Editor, Here we are in another election year. Let’s look at what’s happening in our nation. As a nation, we’ve destroyed future generations by aborting millions of the innocent. Roe vs Wade overturned pitching the decision back to the states is a good start. Now we’re destroying young people with gender confusion to the point they are willing to allow mutilation of their young bodies. Actually, God made it simple. He created humans in just two genders, male and female. We’re causing division with critical race theory. God also...

  • What will Become of the HLRC Building?

    Sep 14, 2022

Dear Editor, It is a shame that our fair city of Malta can’t take care of our elderly. I am sure the residents are not resting in the “rest home”. What is going to become of this fancy structure? I think of the first “care center” in Malta. It was an older house moved into town in the 1950’s. My mother, Palma Solberg, and her neighbor, Lila Vickhammer, were the caretakers. The majority of the residents were men. The women cooked and cared for the residents. They would lift the guys to change their bedding and cleaned them up. I woul...
